I have a Model SI-EE Winfield ( 1 7/8 throat). I'm told this carb flows quite a bit and is not suitable for a street engine?
Thoughts or information if this carb is suitable to use.

What is the value of the EE carb?

Thanks

Hey Tim,
No guru , but can say that if you want to use this carb...that you will have a hard time locating a manifold for it !
Measure the throat diameter. I'm guessing that it is well over 2" ? Maybe would have to have special intake fabricated with that diam ?
As to useage, if you can fab a suitable intake and have a good HOT/warmed up banger engine, it would be fun to try it, IMO. Is it complete and/or rebuilt or rebuildble is also concern as parts are not common ?

I'm not familiar with the early Winfield carbs (Model M and the like), but know a little about the S and SR series carbs. IIRC, the S/SR carbs were 'sized' in 1/8" increments starting with the 1" A, 1 1/8" AA, 1 1/4" B, 1 3/8" BB, 1 1/2" C.

Pictures and bore measurements would be helpful!

That's a Winfield S carb. What are the serial numbers on the base and on the float chambers? I've never seen or heard of a Winfield S/SR that big!

I believe you have a CC model. The paper work I have list the CC as 1 7/8 throat. Largest carb listed in S models is the D. That is a lot of carb for a mild street motor. Price would be somewhere near 7-8 hundred, maybe more on Ebay.

Tim, you should have 2 serial numbers - 1 on the float chamber and 1 on the base. These will tell the size and configuration (updraft, downdraft, etc.)

If your float chamber has a serial number beginning with SBD, it's from a Model S, B size, Downdraft - both numbers will help us determine if it's a matched carb and approx value.

OK, got it.
The bowl has SER SBD 43.53 and the body base has SER SCC 900. Embossed on the bowl is S-I-CC.
Why would the bowl have been swapped?

thanks for your help.

Bowls and throttle bodies were mixed depending on the motor it was going on. If you look at the bottom of the float bowl the brass plugs should be marked with a B or BB. If so you should be able to use that carb on a street motor. If the plugs are not marked the tube inside should be.

Mismatched bowls are pretty common; I believe Winfield recommended going to the next size smaller bowl in some cases to eliminate stumbling. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if bowls were sized A, B, C, and D or if they also had intermediate sizes AA, BB, CC, etc.

You will get arguments that the bowls are only marked A B C etc but I have seen them stamped BB etc. Most only have the fuel inlet changed which is the plug on the bottom. A setup like you have should be fine on a mild street motor.

new winfield's were sold in sections, ie, bowls in one box, throttle bodies in another, choke horns another, so parts may not match as we think they should. i ran a S-C-D on my long bed for many years. that is bigger than winfield recommended but it ran great. your CC may be too big for best performance and economy?

Hey Jim,
I'm aware that you were friend of Winfield. Maybe you know, is there such animal as EE Winfield, and if so, what would be throat size  !
Not long ago, I saw 3 Winfield Ds (or maybe they were DD?), and they were HUGE carbs with , from memory, 21/2" throats ?

Rick,

Here are a couple pics of a Model N carby.

These are a full 2" dia bore and not exactly the best for traffic.

I am looking for some if you happen to see any.

John

Hey John,
Hmm, not familiar with Model N...side draft ?
Anyway, I'll make a couple calls to see what I can find for you.
That Winfield sure was a brilliant guy ! I love the way he made his carb parts, as Jim says...to mix and match. A guy has to be really sharp and study up on his carb parts , to see what you have sometimes, as the parts could be matched to what you had for an engine.
