Water Temp. Senders...

Do I need both left and right water temp senders wired in series as stock for the temperature gauge to read correctly or can I just use one?

Thanks.

If you use just one unit, you will only get the temperature from that respective cylinder head (side).

The two post one is nothing more than a normaly closed switch. It opens around 205°. The single post one reads temperature. That is the one to use. Like Kube says it only shows the temp of the bank it's in.

I'm currently using a single post sender in one bank only. The gauge doesn't seem to work anymore when it was previously.

Since each side of the motor is a seperate cooling system, it's a good idea to monitor both sides in any way possible, either by two seperate gauges or with the original two sender system. It sounds like your 2-pole sender was malfunctioning. As was mentioned earlier, the 2-pole is just a temperture on-off switch with a bi-metalic temperature sensitive trigger. If you can find a good used one or try one of the repops, it could get your system working again.

You can test them with several jumper leads and a sauce-pan with water on a hot plate. That and a decent thermometer to check the water temp against the gauge. Just make sure the senders are grounded to a common ground with the indicator and the battery source.

Remove the wire and gound(earth) it to the block. Turn on the ignition. If the gauge and wiring is good it should move to cold. If the gauge doesn't move try running a wire direct from the gauge signal post to ground and repeat the test. If the gauge does move you have an open in the wiring to the sensor. Do not leave the ignition on for any length of time as you will damage the coil. Best to disconnect it as you troouble shoot.
