My 39 Deluxe

Some information you might be interested in from the VanPelt site.
only the forward-most stamping was visible when looking down into the engine compartment (located between the front crossmember and the dash

Thanks for that link. I think it might have been the Vanpelt site where I found out about the frame stamped number. Mine shows up just behind the left water pump on the top frame rail. Clearly visible now that I have scraped the dirt and paint off.
Rainy cold day coming up tomorrow so maybe I will work in the shop and pull that floor cover. See what is under it.

too bad you can not see if there is a raised area in the block under the intake manifold. Maybe you could post a photo of the area? Pre 1941 81A blocks do not have the raised area where the 41 and later do. Are there 2 welsh plugs in each of the oil pan rails for the block, if so the two sides of the block will bulge slightly, in the area of each plug? Is the top of the engine block over the fly wheel (top of bell housing) embossed with the "81A" Does the vehicle serial number prefix have the letter C as part of it? I believe a Canadian vehicle would. What numbers and letters are in the serial number prefix (01A or 022A for USA Mfg)?

The engines were mated to the transmission at the factory and the whole assembly was stamped only in the location shown above. Some countries and some states in the USA required the engine be stamped with the same number but those were dealer responsibilities. If the car was of Canadian manufacture, it will have Canadian numbers that won't match the USA numbers. Ford of Canada produced their own engines and assigned them different numbers under a different numbering system than Ford USA used.

There is some Canadian number info here. http://www.wnyrg.org/canvins.html

There is an engine block ID thread on this forum that details the differences between the different blocks but that will only get a block IDed to time frame within a year or two. Late 38 through 1940 221 engines were near the same. The 95 horse power 239 Mercury and truck engies also have their seperate characteristics but also similarities with the 85 HP 221 engines. It can be IDed to be consistent with a 1939 engine and that's about as close as you can get.

Canadian chassis number 01161 is fairly early in the model year.
Around the first week of November 1938 according to the 38/39 EFV8 book.

Thanks Chris. That is interesting. It is a Canadian built Ford I assume. The engine was certainly rebuilt at Windsor according to the tag.
Is is my imagination or did some of these 39s come with an i.d. tag on the firewall, engine side? I recall seeing a photo of one and wondered if maybe mine had one originally but it went missing. (Like the Ford script on the trunk lid).

My photo album on this site has a pic of the engine tag with all those interesting little codes on it that I would like to have translated if anybody knows how.

RalphG,
Still curious about Canadian blocks.
Some on this forum have stated that original prewar Canadian blocks have
casting #s on the deck just front of the head. C 81A , C99A, C59AB etc; some on left some on right. Other V8 guys know much more.
Some heads have "Made in Canada" on heads.

Is your 1938 engine a 21 stud or 24 stud? Both true 38s should have flush front crank pulley -denotes short crankshaft. Compare to your
39 pulley hub --extends 1 1/4 " out from sheave 39 and up have longer cranks.

Loved hearing the 39 running!

Pretty sure all my flatheads are 24 stud and have made in Canada cast on the heads. I have one new (old stock) head for the newer flatheads with the water outlet at the front. Got a pair of Mercs. I'll have to check them. Plus a 46 truck engine to check as well. Seems to me the 38 parts car has aluminum heads (not finned).
Did I post this link to the latest video with music?
