run out of petrol

If everything is in good working order, maybe 6-8 times of turning the engine over. That is if you ran everything out of the carb and fuel pump trying to get just a little bit farther down the road.

ok thx have an unreliable gauge, normally keep it topped up but daydreaming today, luckily was running it outside my garage when it stopped so guess carb and pump empty, put gallon in only turned it over a couple of times, will sort in morn.

on another note my gauge reads 1/4 when empty as just found out, when you fill it goes off scale, maybe good idea to fix? would this be sender or gauge the car is 12volt. thx

Likely your problem is the float level, which ca adjusted.Remove the sending unit and bend the arm to suit.If you miss, try again! James

Do you have one of "Drakes" new 99A gauges. Mine does the same thing. At half tank mark it is pretty darn near dry. No need to complain to them, however, they will only say that's the first complaint we have ever had on that sending unit. Horse hockey.

I meant to say Drakes 99A sending unit. It is advertised as working with original gauges. I have original dash gauge and Drakes 99A sending unit. It hides the needle and gives out of gas at just under 1/2 tank. anyone else have this problem with this setup?

Quickest way is to get fuel back up there is to disconnect at the carb, stick a bit of hose on the end and suck...

On my '34 I fitted a Ford Pilot pump, which also has a hand lever that allows you to get fuel back up there manually before turning over on the battery. These are great for cars that aren't driven regularly and that tend to drain back to the tank over time.

My tank sender came from Mac's, and I don't remember the number. It also runs the same way. At 1/2 on the gage there is 2 gallons left in the 11 gallon (CDN) tank. Byron W

It's best when the tank is empty to adjust the float arm to indicate the level of the tank. Most of the time the gauge is installed with some fuel in the tank and throws of the the calibration. I wouldn't bend the arm. If possible cut the arm rod shorter. I'd rather have it indicate less than more.

The sending unit is a variable resistor. The higher the resistance the lower the gas gauge reads. If your fuel gauge reads too high, you can experiment with adding resistors in line with the sending unit. Maybe someone with a good original sending unit out of a car can bench test the resistance a the full and empty positions and post that for us.

sounds interesting

FoMoCo originally used the heated bi-metalic strip set up to vary the current to the indicator unit. Calibrating a variable resistor to perform the function is definitely a trial and error alteration and may not yield accurate readings in certain portions of the indicator range. It's almost easier to repair the original units than it is to make something else work.

Best of luck to those that have the patients to try.
