Hood removal

I need to remove the hood on my 1946 coupe. Do I remove the hood from the hinges, or remove the hinges from the car body? Any recommendations on a good procedure to remove the hood, would be appreciated.

If your hood alignment and fit are good now, remove the hood from the hinges. When you remove the hinges from the body you will have to realign everything. Place padding on the cowl between the hood edge and cowl. It's at minimum a 2 man job. If you can find a 3'rd man that's even better. Loosen all the bolts first before attempting to remove them.

I like to use spray chalk and spray around where the hood attaches to the hinges so it can easily be lined back up when reinstalled and the chalk cleans up nicely.

Gary, what about the spring? Leave in place? Looks like a bear to take off first and re-install. Thanks John

If you can get 3 people only remove bolts from hood.
Remove spring bolts first, that will let you raise the hood higher and make it easier the get the others.

The May\June 2009 issue of the V-8 Times had an article on hood alignment which is informative help when you put it back on

I've never done this, but, is it possible to drill two small holes,1/8 or so, thru the hood/hinge mating area to be used for alignment with some pins when going back together?
That's assuming the present hood fit is good.
I last owned a '47 in 1964, so I can't recall the hinge arrangement.
