Hey all, New to the Barn, just got my dad's 29 Phaeton out of barn and looking to start the restoration.
Good thing about this- he last ran it in 96 before he passed away so I just have to get it started again- second bonus In the barn I grabbed all the extra's I have an extra Engine- extra Trannie- extra radiator with chrome shield-6 extra wheels - extra horns - 2 carbs- 2 water pumps.

Trying to figure things out- ordering a manual to help, but I'm looking thru some websites and everything I see has 29's have 21" wheels- tires on pop's are marked 19" this is worng correct?

Second, I'm looking at lights on the car and everything I see on line has the lights with chrome housing. Pop's are black housings and each light has a small marker light- havent' opened them to see if they are wired. Are these aftermarket, just marker lights? Ther are about 2 inches across.

Last Cowels' have holes in them, is this for Mirrors or for lights?

Sure more questions will follow- these a just a few to start.

I just went through the same thing with the wrong size wheels. 1929's have 21" wheels, but evidently lots of people think the 19" wheels ride better as the tires are a bigger cross section. More than a handful of people told me the wheels were wrong when looking at my truck, so i bought a new (old) set of the right sized ones. I think the 21" wheels look nicer as the wheels are bigger and the tires smaller.

First of all congrats on the A ownership, condolencies on the reason.

OK,

'28 - '29 21" wheels are correct. 19" are for '30-'31.

Commercial vehicles had black steel head lights, the marker lights are an aftermarket accessory.

The holes are for Cowl lights (parking lights).

Keep the questions coming we are here for you!!

Also purchase a few books

Vol 1 of the mechanics handbook by Andrews.
Restoration and judging guidelines
the 8 1/2 x 11 service bulletins

These are to start. While you might not want to restore for judging it is still good to know what actually is supposed to be there.

Does it really need to be restored, or could it be driven as is? If it's original, it wure would be nice to keep it original, as there are so few left, and they are a great help for the cars that really need to be restored. Pictures would be great.

Phaetons are great cars! The one to the left I have owned and driven since 1965. I recommend getting involved with a local Model A club. You don't have to restore a car to enjoy it but they can ususally answer questions and have tips on how to do things. Of course I always recommend the Model A Times magazine, but more important is getting the car up and running and safe to enjoy.

Sounds like a great start. I'd suggest, other than getting it running, is to address the safety items first (brakes, steering ect.) then move to on from there.
Great to have ya aboard.

Thanks all,

Dad bought everythign back in the late 40's and we had it in the barn.

I'd like to keep original but I think pop had it as a runner and used what parts he thought were for it, not thinking about true 29.

the works of the vehicle are great, Engine-******-breaks pop kept all that up, it's the body -interior he didn't do much with other than touch up paint when he spotted metal.

I found about 9 coils under front seat and it looks like the pans - springs and risers are shot. Back seat had tire pump extra belts three extra sets of plugs.

Dad was a pack rat and kept everything - good or not.

Pics will be posted as I start the transformation. (first have to clean the garage to get it in there-wifey is fully behind and helping clean the garage with me-Big bonus)

Do your headlights look like these? These buckets were on my Ford when I bought it in 1960, I believe used to convert to sealed beam bulbs. I thought they looked kind of neat, so, since my hydraulic brakes keep me out of the judging points world anyhow, I have kept them through subsequent restorations. Some people tell me they are from a truck; others say they are King Bee aftermarket items.

I did put the original wheels back on.

The headlights are same type, except pop's got a two inch tear drop marker light on top. It's like a a mini headlight on top of the main light. The glass looks frosted too.

I have seen someone on here had a pic from Hershey with a marker light on top of main headlight, excpet that pic the marker light wasn't tear drop shape it blended to the rear of the headlight.

I'll be getting a new phone tomorrow and get a pic for you to look at it. Cause I never seen it anywhere except pop's
