Unusual spare tire carrier

At the French Lick MARC meet this year, there was a coupe with a spare tire mounted under the rear of the car. Does anyone have any information on this carrier. Was it an available aftermarket accessory or home made or what? It looked really neat and like it was an original item, although I am pretty sure it did not come with the car new. Any information on owner or other information on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Wayne

Modern undermounted spares are great until the cable rusts away and the spare drops onto the road at 60 MPH. Why didn't they make the cables from stainless?

One of the participants in the Summer Tour mounted his spare under the bed of his roadster pick up. He used the holder off of a modern pickup...not sure what brand, but it is slick. You don't notice it unless you are really looking.

My 72 f100 and my 85 f150 mounted under but held in with a removable crossbar which to me seems better than the cable which is now very rusty on the 2001. I can envision a home made solution for the "A".

I had a 2000 Ford f150 and when ever I backed into snow or embankment it would loosen the catch and the spare tire would fall down and drag
some times it would be miles later before it fell, made a hell of a lot of noise
I worked in the forest a lot,so I had to use a chain to hold it in place
very poor design

All of my Explorers (92, 93, 04, 05) have had the spare under the rear suspended with a cable. The only one I had a problem with is the 92 when I had to actually use the spare. The spare itself had become so encrusted with dirt & road debris over the years (on the upper side) that the wheel itself rusted and was almost impossible to get mounted on the hub so I could get it home.

No problem with the cable suspension though.

Model T pickups had the tire mounted under the bed. I would assume he adapted one of those mounts.

I've got a december 1930 AA project that came from the factory with an under the rear frame spare tire mount. It may be common but its the only under the frame spare tire mount for a model A that I've ever seen. I think that it would only be usable with a AA truck.
