My passes came today with a note that use of handicap scooters will require a $50,000 liability certificate. Anyone with more specific info?

Ron, check with your homeowners insurance. They should be able to issue a certificate of insurance showing Hersey as "certificate holder" The homeowners policy covers personal liability and bumping into someone with a scooter at a swap meet is personal liability. There should be no charge for the certificate.

Seems rather strange and a very slippery slope, to treat handicapped persons different, and require special insurance. I get it if it is a lawn mower with out deck, etc. as you see at some shows. However to treat a true handicapped device different is a bad idea. I think they need to read the laws. Many stores in our area have these for use in their store for those who need them, no questions asked, no proof of need or insurance required.

The first question I have is, what does Hershey allow as far as motorized transportation on the swap meet grounds. If only "handicap scooters" then there is no problem with picking on the disabled.

Next, when one goes into a store and uses their scooter, the store has the insurance.

I haven't been to Hershey for 7 or 8 years, but I saw a couple Segways at that time. Also saw an electric handicap scooter with a small Honda generator keeping the batteries charged on the go.

The fairground here has had some problems with scooters running up on the backs of peoples heels. It hurts.I was wearing boots when it happened to me,but the plastic edge of the floorboard put a pretty good slice in the leather. One old fellow here checked with his insurance,he was covered under his homeowners policy. If he had no homeowners policy he could get coverage through some senior program for next to nothing.I can see it getting dicey if somebody gets their achilles tendons damaged by a scooter.

Its been a few years sense I have been to Hershey, But in the years I was there it was getting like going to a NASCAR race in some of the aisles & they really needed STOP lights at the intersections.. A lot of people were NOT handicapped, Motorized Bikes, Scooters, John Deere four seater, You name it, It was used..

Tom, maybe that was an early Hybrid vehicle:p

Lawsuits? In today's USA?? Come on guys get real ain't a gonna happen:cool:

This $50K liability certificate is going to impact my wife & I as she's been using an electric scooter due to back surgery for a decade. I will check with my homeowner's ins. & hope we're already covered. If not, this is an additional cost to those of us who go by the rules and register the scooter at the maintenance bldg. I've seen unautherized gas powered scooters roaming the Hershey flea mk't year after year; and without the pass in view as required by HERCO. These are the folks, those who ignore the rules, that we must worry about.

You ARE covered by your homeowners insurance - it's personal liability - and almost everyone carries more than $50K limits on their policy. If you need to increase the liability limit the additional premium is nominal.
