I have a 28 roadster and want to replace the gas tank with a good usable one (no rust inside) will all 28 29 models interchange? I am going to Hershey to look for one.

They will all interchange except for the four door sedans.

Red,

The same gastank used in the 28-29 Fordor Sedans is the same tank used on other 28-29 Model A's. I know the OUTWARD look is different because the tank is placed different that is all.

But if you could please, please tell me why they wont interchange with those used in the Fordor sedans.

Thanks Red.

Pluck

The 28-29 fordor tanks will fit into any other models from those yrs. They do have some extra holes along the top lip. I have removed three gas tanks from fordors & used them in other bodies. The early 28's have the choke rod bracket located further under the tank, this is an L shaped bracket & is diff. from the later brackets. They fit under the cowl of the fordors & have a felt pad around the filler which may cause some rust issues on the top of the tank.

Some of the late 29 commercial A & AA fuel tanks have the 30-31 type of filler spout and gas cap, but they would still fit and work fine.

The early 1930 up untill around june pickup, AA trucks and station wagons used the same style tanks but used the tab type gas caps as the later 30-31 models. Other than the gas cap and filler spout they are the same as later 28-29 tanks and will fit.

If you have a tank that is rotted out, but has a good top offer it to a Hot Rodder. Far better to use a junk tank than cut up a useable one, shipping would be cheaper too. Bob

Good point!:)

I saw a mint tank after it was cut up for gauges. My friend got the bottom and baffles. Sure was sad to see a mint tank cut up.

If the Lords a willin and the creeks don't rise I am planning on bringing a 29 tank to Hershey . If interested I can send pics . Hopefully this years Hershey is a little drier .

Steve,

I didn't think they would interchange because of the differences in the firewall. My fathers sedan has two "rows" of bolts rather than the single "row" that all the other 28/29's have.

Yes the 28-29 fordor tanks will fit other cars. The firewall difference is just a filler panel. Been there done that. Also welded the extra holes along the top lip closed. Rod

My Cabriolet also has two rows of bolts on the firewall. And the cowl is not part of the tank as with many others. I removed the tank to fix a leak and seal the inside. With the tank removed from the car, the full cowl is still in place.

Early 28 tanks have GAV located further back and the loop bracket is different in design than later models. I figured this out the hard way. I bought a 29 tank to replace my early 28 but could never get it to fit. Finally just repaired the original tank.

All of us hot rodders are not like that.

I needed a 28 tank cut out, and I had a mint original tank to spare, but I hunted and bought a very rusty tank for $30 and used that.

I too, hated to see a fellow hot rodder put a plasma to a mint 30 tank....

I also fitted 30 deluxe stanchions to a 28 cowl and could have easily cut down an old pair of stanchions, would have saved me several hours, but could not do it, and fabricated the lower posts to suit.

Then I fabricated the windscreen frame to suit, again to save an original one.

So, not all of us are chop and channelers .

I, for one respect that original steel has survived for 86 years .

I have no qualms about a few necessary extra holes in a firewall, but that's about it for modification to original.
