8BA in 1940 Ford - Oil Pan

This one is tough to search since 8BA, oil and pan are only three letters and the search engine doesn't like it:

I have some slight interference between original drag link and oil pan on my 8BA, installed in my 1940. Can someone short cut me on what kind of pan/oil pump pickup is needed and also if they think I can do this swap with the engine in the car. I will have the rear/transmission out within a few weeks if getting that deep will help me any.

Thanks, as always!

The best fit for an 8ba in a '40 is a '49-'50 early '51 Mercury pan & pickup.
2nd best is a '48 to '52 Ford pickup & associated pickup. These run a little closer to the drag link, but still clear.
Either can be installed while the engine is in the car, by raising the front of the engine a couple of inches.

you need one with a rear sump like from a pickup or one from a merc the first pic is a 50 ford pu second is a 50 merc and gives more clearance.i had no clearence problem with either ..I think it both will workin a 40 ford

Thanks for the replies! Do you have a part number for the correct oil pump pickup, assuming I need to swap it out as well? Do I need to do anything special with the bellhousing/flywheel/clutch? The clutch/etc seems to function fine - I only deal with an occasional clunk over a bump when the drag link contacts the pan.
Thanks again!

For reference on the pickups...the truck one is reproduced (don't know quality) and available from all the Ford parts places. The Merc one is designed to fit through a horizontal baffle that is a welded part of the Merc pan...this one has a pickup very like the truck one, but it has a horizontal plate welded to it that covers and fills the hole in the baffle that allows the pickup to fit through.

When I installed an 8BA in my 40 Ford I used the 49-51 Merc oil pan part # 8CM-6675-C and my 1963 receipt shows the oil pump that I bought new from the local Ford dealer is part # A9AZ-6600-A. This is the "short body" pump like this one:

This part # A9AZ-6600-A number also cross references to the 8BA oil pump shown on MacVan Pelt's site. Do a "Google" search.
http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/engine-partsprices-pg3.htm However, because the Merc oil pan is shallower I used the shorter oil pick up tube and screen assembly. This is shown on Mac's site also as part # 8RT-6615. In the Mercury Manual the oil pump cover and screen assembly is part # 8CM 6622. Give Mac a call and see what he says. The 49-51 Merc oil pan fits the best especially if you plan to "rake" your car since the tie rods will come closer to the oil pan. My tie rods clear by about 1 inch.

Thanks, guys. If anyone has a pan for sale in reasonable condition, PM me, please.
Oldskool, great '41 - love those '49 Plymouth bumpers - that's what I run on my '40.

If you have a slit clearance problem when turning left you could bend the pitman arm down. You will need to remove it and heat it. I had that problem on 47 with 53 truck pan.

I also bent the pitman arm on my '39 with 8ba engine. Basically, made it straight by removing the factory offset.

When you have truck water pumps there is as much as 3" from frame to bottom of water pumps. Speedway has motor mounts 35 to 40 Ford and Mercury to lift it.

Might be easier to modify the existing pan. This is a fairly common issue with engine swaps. You say it is slight interference, so think it would be an easy mod. Between a slight mod to the pitman arm and the pan, should do the trick.

...like this....

..this was to clear steering in a '41, and there are also a number of pitman arms with different offsets , be better plan to find one that fits without bending them as it's inclined to cause stress cracks and eventual failure. Even tho some folks do and they get away with it.....the best thing is to search out a pitman arm with the offset that better suits your car , arms from '37 thru '48 all share the same splines.

.....incidentally,this is the pickup truck oilpan, the Merc pan fits without clearance issues.

Pickup pan is the best fit without cutting anything
Rear sump Mercury pan with the windage tray is deeper in the front and may contact U bolts and or cross member and will be close to the axle and tie rod … it did on my 35

In the end
I made a 59 pan work on the 8ba for maximum clearance
I still have the jig plate I made for doing this if anyone would like to do one … probably 30 lbs to ship back and forth

Thanks mate, it's probably a little larger than it needs to be,but I didn't want the drag link to scrape on it later on when the fresh mounts have settled a little.....figured bigger was better :). I also had to do pretty much the same thing when I put an 8ba in my '36 Ute years ago , regards, Col.

I have an 8BA in my 40 tudor. I have an issue with the lower radiator hoses interfering with the Chassis Engineering sway bar. I installed a drop axle in the car and I can no longer use the sway bar as the bushing rods don't have enough clearance between the spring and axle. Is there a different radiator I can use or something I can do to alleviate this
