They sure did. Ford trucks had a cast iron half bell that was interchangeable with the Mercury stamped steel type from 49 to early 51.

Be sure to get the correct matching starter plate for the bell housing as all are not the same.

Starters not the same. Some are 2 bolt ans some are 2 long bolts one short.

I think the one I have behind the 52 8ba is a 49 mercury. I used a adapter and a t5 1993 chevy ford bolt pattern.Not the early butterfly bolt pattern. 26 splined chevy clutch,ford throw out bearing. The cast ford bellhousing is the round bar with the forks for the throwout bearing. Not the side pull stamped plate fork. came off a mercury engine.
