Unusual 8BA timing mark situation

Hi Guys

I have an AV8 with a 1BA engine. I used an aluminum timing gear cover with the timing indicator. For a crank pulley I used a double wide belt pulley with the "skirt" on the rear. The "skirt" has a timing bump on it which I hope is the 2 degree BTDC mark. The front pulley was cut off for clearance and truck pumps were used with a single belt only.

What is unusual is the timing pointer off the aluminum gear cover fits inside the pulley skirt? I've never encountered this before but I assume this will still be okay to use for timing but wanted to know what anyone else thought.

Its a 255ci engine with an Isky Max 1 cam, .050 shaved 8BA heads, single 94 (for now), and a centrifical advance Bubba chevy distributor. I find I have to advance the timing from the bump 6-8 degrees to get a decent idle.

Much obliged for any info.

Your best bet would be to establish the true TDC and mark it on the pulley so you know where your starting from.

Your aluminum front cover should have two possible positions for the timing pointer, about 3/8" apart. The top location is for the metal '48-'53 truck/'49 Ford/Merc wide belt pulley like you have, and will locate the pointer outside of the pulley.
The lower position is for the smaller OD narrow belt stepped cast iron '50-'53 crank pulley, and is where yours is now. Both positions will result in 2 degrees BTDC when aligned with the bump on either pulley.

Thanks J, Bob, and Binx

Binx - thanks for drecting me to Bob's great post on this subject. Turns out I have the cover Bob shows as A and I see where the second timer location is marked. Mine doesn't hit anything inside the edge and its easy to set the timing - as long as it 2 derees BTDC I'll take the easy way out and leave it. Thanks again.
