Can someone tell me about this tank date stamp? How do you read it, is the single 9 mean 1929?
Thanks

Richie,

Go to my website www.plucks329s.org then go to Additional Studies, then go to Letters, Numbers and Codes and there you will learn all about the gas tank date and then some.

The date on your tank is September 12, 1928...I think...At least it looks like a 28 to me...Anyone else?

Pluck

It's a RHD too, would have came out of Canada.
I've heard Canada tanks don't always have date stamped on them. Was happy to find this after having them blasted.
Thanks Richard

Right hand drive........don't a lot of foreign countries go by day, month, year?

If so, then this would be Decenber 9, 1928. A lot of things were changed during the last few months of 1928, so if you could let us know what clutch, starter, etc. we could help date it. The "Service Bulletins" list the changes.

I just thought of something to help confuse the matter. Didn't all gas tanks come from Detroit? If so, then I'd think the date stamp would be standard.

Sorry, all my parts have come from many now dead cars from all across South East Australia.
I'm saving everyone's scrap and making a Model A RPU
The tank came out of a paddock only a few miles away from home, it cleaned up great.
Most of my parts are late 28, will be a on the road as a 29 Model A.

Why a 29 and not a 28?

My canada car for RHD export was USA date stamped.

Month first then day .

I doubt any were ever stamped over here , why would they, when they would have been already been tested before shipping ?

Ritchie....september 12th 1928.

BTW, did you buy your body from Ballarat swap this year ?

The doors, cab rear, seats and trim all came out of Sydney. A guy was modifying his roadster pickup for more inside room, extended doors and cab, folding roof. I picked up the unneeded parts.
Tank, chassis, front axle assy, engine all came out of my town of Echuca.
The lower cowl/firewall was made up from parts from Wodonga and out of Eastern Melbourne.
All came from private sales, never have much luck out of swap meets, having the family with me for most of them means I am not getting to them to late.
I will be calling it a 29 as the receipt is written as a 1929 chassis. That's what the title/rego people go off.

I believe all the tanks were made in Detroit as all the Canadian cars are stamped with US month/day/year , not day/month/year which is more universal.
All the Canadian cars also are mostly stamped from May 1928 to August 1929, exactly as per in US production. Dates had nothing to do with the assembly date of the car.
The tanks were electrically welded by a new & special process [requiring mercury?] of which the Rouge Factory only had the machinery & skilled workers to do it.
