Replating a '29 round center bumper clamp

When the round face is replated, I presume the backside and stud will also be covered. I suspect the backside, stud and nut is supposed to be black, yes? Does one go in with a paintbrush to make this detail correct?

Greg,
I gently remove the round cover and have it plated apart from the base. Then I finish and paint the base before putting the face back on. You do need to be real careful with the edges of the cover. Before plating, I make sure it's a real tight fit, but not so tight that I have to actually bend the edges. You don't want to crack the plating. I put a little JB Weld on the base to ensure the cover won't move around and/or rattle.

Dave, How were you able to remove the cover? With the crimp, it doesn't look like it would be possible without really messing it up.
