Why the difference in these timing covers

Everything lines up on these two cases. The difference is where the front motor mount sets. On the one that is primed there is a #3 stamped right above the hole for the front crankshaft seal. The other one has a #2 stamped. Could these be from different production years.

The left, primer colored motor mount, is for the early '28 with the solid to the crossmember front mounting. The right one is for the typical "u" front motor mount used a bit later and throughout the remainder of Model A production.

Also note cover #2 holds the generator about 1/4" farther forward creating a belt alignment problem with mixed early/late parts.

I think so too. I believe that the powerhouse generator was used up untill june 29 in some cases. If they were different the early cover would have to be used in 29 also. My june 29 tudor uses the later style timing cover. Not trying to be disagreeable, just my thought. I think that the generator mount looks shorter on the early cover because of the extended shelf that extends over the early atyle crossmember
