To permatex or not to permatex?

I'm replacing my car's head gasket, and I've gotten some conflicting advice. Should I or shouldn't I spray the new gasket with Permatex?

Are you talking about their Hi Tack product??? If so I use it on all my gaskets to help keep them in place when assembling. For those that don't know what it is, it is a spray on adhesive. It's red in color. I am changing out a leaky valve cover gasket on an OT vehicle as I type this and I just used it. I use it all the time.

It depends on what gasket you are using. That said on the copper gaskets I use the copper spray sparingly. I am not a big fan of Permatex from past experience. I prefer Yamabond.

Hey Rich,
As said...depends...on gasket used. What you using for head gasket , i.e.- head gasket composition

permatex is junk, unless you like scraping off gaskets, joes 31 is right on yamabond and copper spray, (yamabond only sold at Yamaha motorcycle shops)

I will be using a copper head gasket. I take it spraying is a yes, but what to spray is now the question. Yamabond is one suggestion. Any others?

yamabond is not a spray (use on other gaskets and very thin also on bolts such as rear end bolts) copper coat comes in a spray can, follow the directions on the can, remember more is not always good,

Snyder's has the spray you need for the head gasket. As machine girl says don't overspray. A light coating is fine. You don't want it to ooze into the water jackets and clog things up.

I put them on dry. Never had a problem. If you are doing a gasket that requires some type of adhesive I use a dab of grease to hold until I can get all the bolts on.
Permatex is junk, do not use, dries up and causes leaks.

Ok, then I'd use copper coat...on both sides ! Speak with gasket maker representative , tell them your using one of their copper head gaskets. If the company is 'BEST', you will be advised as I have said.

I have used a good coat of aerosol silver spray on a copper gasket. Helps to seal water leaks too. Also works great when a copper gasket needs to be reused in an emergency.

Be carefull not to get any on the keys of your computer keyboard. Smiley face.

I just did the head gasket in mine. I used the copper gasket from Bratton's...no special sealants.

Based on Pop's advice (and I've learned better than to question him) I just smeared a little motor oil on the top and bottom of the gasket before installation. Pop says it allows it to slip around until everything finds the spot it is happiest in.

I can't say for sure if the logic is right, but it went in no problem and sealed perfect.

Oh, and be careful not to over-torque the water-neck studs. It is easy to snap off the tangs. Pop had me back off the torque wrench five pound for those two.
