hey guys i am looking into getting this car, its a 56 fairlane town sedan its got a 292 y block with oem ****** i am guessing, i do see a power steering pump, but no power booster, i have read that some do not have booster as we know then today, its a 4 door, , about whatsnteh going price for this, i will post pic when i get home , its teal and white

Thanks

Check the front cross member under the radiator, if its shot ( most likely) it will give you a good value. It's a big job to replace.

Looks good in the pics. Under the hood looks about right. It IS a 4 door, which aren't worth as much to some of us, imho. For comparative pricing check edmunds.com classic or collector cars. Prices are all over the place. What are you willing to pay to own it? Or as I call it "your pain level" that's the real question.

You should look at the lower body panels ( see if a small fridge magnet sticks ), if
the small magnet won't stick, it's a sign of plastic filler possibly over rust or dents.

Also, check the underside of the floor to look for evidence of rust or rot, especially
the body mounting to the frame, to see if those metal pieces are solid yet.

Nice looking car. How's the interior? Any more photos?
What state is it located in as that may determine the possibility and extent of rust.

talkwrench, are you talking about the main front crossmember near all the steering linkage? how do you determine if it is "shot" other than rust, and taking it in for a front end alignment. where would you source another one other than another car? please excuse my ignorance. I have not worked on one of these since I was in high school. they were only 8 years old then. I have been looking for a good 56 for awhile now and have not found one I like in my price range. thank you for any information.------Jim

Goodell fabrications make a simple weld in replacement, but it really requires the whole front clip to be removed tho give you room to fit it.
The front member is usually eaten away due to the radiator overflow over 50 years and if it is showing any sign of rust replace it.
A member on the 52-59 ford forum on the HAMB makes replacements also. The Goodell unit comes with the front engine stabiliser bracket attached also.
These cars are also prone to rust in the inner and outer rocker panels, mounting points to the chassis, floors, front toe boards, lower front fenders and lower rear quarter panels. All of these parts are reproduced by EMS. They have recently added the rear tailpan to their inventory.
But even with these problem areas they are great cars and hold up well in today's traffic. Four doors seem a little less saleable, so a deal should be able to be struck. The price for it is a bit like, "How long is a piece of string?"
If you like it buy it.

Two versions, one for a concourse restoration and a hot rod version.

real nice looking car.check for rust under car.this car looks like it was taken care of.

Great advice. I would really look at the bottom (closest to door) of the front fender(s). Something doesn't look quite right. Also, doors are not fitting the rockers real well. Look for rust and Mickey Mouse (fiberglass, etc.) repairs.
I would put it on a hoist to get a really good look at the underside.
Looks like a nice car and worth taking a good look at.
Good Luck.

The factory power steering is nice to have. The price of repairs for that have come down a lot. Power brakes really were not necessary on those cars. That car looks well cared for under the hood.

Nice looking. My 56 Customline had the front crossmember rebuilt, also there is rust on the drivers floor panel, the rear quarter panels and on the area around the license plate light. Also look at the rockers. Mine are good but they are prone to get unatended care wise. Lift the floor mats. Get under there and check it out.
Sorry if I cant explain myself properly, but I'm still getting around these terms.
Good luck.

no it got away from me ,, i am still looking to trade or when i sell my truck i will hunt one down
thanks
