anyone install seat belts? did some test fitting and looks like it's not going to be easy any one done this before? two front and two back?

Oooh I will be following this thread.

Mike

I had the seat out to put new steering box in and put it back in to see what this will take to install belts...and not a problem to drill holes for front in floor behind the front seat on the floor.....maybe use same hole for the two center ones...but to weave the belts through the seat frame have to cut slots in sheet metal @ back of front seat/ or make slots @ the hard wood that the seat lays on.... and then the belts on the sides also a fitment issues..looking for advise or solution's already figured out
Got belts from snyders...I can see that belt re-tractor's may be needed for the outboard belts perhaps

I fastened them directly to the metal seat back using large fender washers. My Briggs seat has a concave portion near the bottom. My seat is all the way back, so attaching them to the cross member is not an option because the fastening point is in front of the back of the seat. I made sure that every bolt holding the seat to the slide assembly and the slide assembly to the floor was in excellent shape. I suppose a reinforcing bar across the back of the seat would also be good. I could see no other feasible option.

Here's the 3 point pivot and retractor on the B pillar in my 160B.

It's a complete three-point retractable inertia lock (ELR) system like in a modern car. The door post mounting for the retractor and upper swivel took some engineering on my part for attachment and strength. They are available from several vendors, many are USA made and assembled, some are cheaper chinese

The height of the upper pivot from the seat was determined using DOT/SAE guidelines.
When you buy a 'kit' the mounting height should be in the instructions.

I used the anchor plates available from the belt companies. Yes, you could rip them through the body, but that amount of force would probably cut me in half with the belt anyway.

MikeK,

Thanks for that post, I've been look at seat belts and was wondering how one might install that.. I like your belts..

Regards,

Some good suggestions above. Also a search on seat belts will give you more ideas. Lap belts are fine if anchored properly but if you are thinking about 3 point shoulder belts, please make sure you don't install the shoulder belt over the seat back and anchor it to the floor behind the seat. Some have done this, thinking it to be safe. In an accident, the force on the shoulder belt will be downward, crushing your spine.
MikeK's installation on the B pillar with a pivot point for the shoulder belt is the way to go provided there is ample support at the pillar. Congrats on wanting to install belts. We A owners are careful drivers but many others are not. Keep investigating belt installation possibilities. With your own ingenuity and ideas from others, you will figure out what is best for your own situation. Good luck..........Glen

There's an extensive article on this topic at http://www.modelatouring.com/Three point lap belt installation.pdf

I'm looking for an example of installing 3 point sb in a coupe. Just looking at mine it seems the pillar would be too far forward for the shoulder strap to adequately secure ones shoulder closest to the pillar. I'm still exploring other locations but don't see any real good options. If anyone has done it I would appreciate seeing some pics

I put two seat belts in the front seat and three in the rear of my '28 Briggs Body 4 door. Placed large angle iron under seats for attachment points of the belts with the ends of the angle iron under the frame. If get into a severe enough accident where to body detaches from the frame then will not have to concerned about being cut in half by the belts. In most cases will keep me and passengers in the vehicle.

Well one thing for sure do not bolt it through the floor to the frame rails. Body can seperate from the chasses in a serious accident

Ray P,
Check out a post by Lona dated 3/25/14 with pics on a 3 point belt installation in a 31 roadster which should also work in a coupe. PM me if you need more info. I am a firm believer in seat belts and will help anybody if I can.......Glen
