Disc brakes

A friend asked me to pose this question.

If you do a disc brake conversion on a Model A front axle can you run stock 19 inch wire wheels?

Thanks.

Bob Moore

Most disc brake conversions I have seen use a GM wheel pattern and are for the 37-48 spindles. beinf either the 37-41 roundback spinldes or the 42-48 square back spindles. Whhel adaptors can be bought to change the wheel pattern, but the A wheels are made to rest on the drum for some of their support. Rod

IT can be done if you have the money save time and money and get a set of Lincon backing plates from mt prouducts or willson welding they work great

No the wheels will not hold up, it puts all the load on just the lug nut area. here is one I put together using a Model A front axle 39 spindles Chevy disc brakes and a adopter spacer from Chevy to Ford and used the 16" 35 wheels.

29 tudor , daughter's car of engine builder RON KELLEY just east of Dallas,TX . Last time I saw car was in 2003 at WORLD MEET, she had 4 wheel disc brakes that he put on her car. Looking at her car you really didn't notice it . have fun modelAtony Lafayette,LA she ran car all thru high school and sold the A later I believe .

Remember that the discs will throw a lot of brake dust on the wire wheels. My first choice would be the Lincoln brakes and next the '39-48 Ford brakes.

How do you connect the brake rods to the calipers?:D:p
i have a mountain bike with disk brakes (can you believe someone was throwing it away?) They are a bit odd to adjust but i see no reason mechanical disk brakes could not be made. Might need a vacuum booster under the floor though.

A quick perusal of some catalogs other than model A ones will show that mechanical disc brakes have been in use on go carts, quarter midgets, half midgets and many other small car applications for many years.
They are also used for emergency brakes with automotive disc applications.
I have them on one of my cars and can lock the rears at 50 mph.
