Bolt hole on lower left of cowl post

The indentation in the lower left of the cowl post has a square hole in it. Looks as if a bolt should be there. What is this for? What does it attach to? I tried looking in, and poked around with a screw driver but access from inside seems to be non-existent.

Any ideas - or pointers in the right direction?

Cheers

Yep, there is a carriage bolt head on the outside. The next time I have my door panel off I'll have to see what the bolt does.

Not so fast Tom.
It should be a rivet,...it's at the union where the "A" pillar and
the outside sill are put together. There are 2 on each side, the second
is visible when you open the door, at the front of the threshold.

Dudley is correct, it is a brazier head rivet. I am attaching a picture of the one in my 29 phaeton. I suppose you could install a carriage bolt like Tom said, but Ford used rivets.

Do you mind if I hijack this thread and ask why my rivet hole is round, not square?

Yes, a rivet in USA because you have steel subframes.

In OZ, we have wooden subframes.

That square hole takes a carriage or cup head bolt about 3 inches long and bolts right thru the wooden subframe with a nut inside.

Thanks,..I didn't look at the "location"...
Gezzz,....this means Tom was correct....darn!

Seeing that OZ bound model A/s were mostly phaetons, and I guess the use of timber subframes was to satisfy some local content rule, I wonder if the hole was stamped square on the CKD kits at Windsor, or made square when the Canadian body was assembled with OZ wood at Geelong ?

Hi John
My Aussie Pheaton - is an early 28.
There is a round need bolt that goes into the hole you describe. It has a square head nut on the inside of the woodwork.

Unless it is 1 of the 6 imported complete 1928 phaetons. There were also 6 complete roadsters imported in 1928.
