Water pump bushing fit...

I'm doing a water pump O/H for a customer. I measured the
clearance(press) between the bushing and the housing...
I have .0033" press, which I think is WAY to much. The old
bushing is .0013", which I think is okay. Question is...

What is the nominal press for the rear bushing?

A typical "interference fit" for most machinists is 0.001 per inch of diameter. More than this you might have problems breaking the casting (the Model A pump castings are nothing special)

And this is consistent with what you look out.

I think you have a choice. You can ream out the opening in the casting, or you can reduce the diameter of the bushing.

You might talk to your supplier to see what he says about it?

I agree with Joe K, no more than .001 interference fit or you will likely crack the casting as I did on a 3 hole B water pump. Ream out the bush for a light press fit.
You might consider also adding some locktite if you are concerned about leaks.

Dudley, guess I will be micing the next bushing, or impeller if I do another rebuild.
I have been going by feel, and been lucky 9 out of 10 times. My problems with a collapsed wp housing under an arbor press was lack of support, Guess I need to make some changes to my technique. Bob

Since I posted the question,...I put the bushing in the lathe and gave it
.0016" press. It all went together fine.

Thanks for the help,
Dudley
