How to install grommet on speedo cable?

I know that I can force it over, but does anyone have a simple way to get the grommet over the end of the speedometer cable? This is the cowl end that I am working on.

I think if you heat the rubber grommet, it will be more elastic. I have never tried to put the grommet over the end of a speedometer, but I have heated rubber items to make them more elastic in the oven (medium heat). I will be installing the grommet on the speedometer cable in the near future, so please post your results.

You can heat the grommet in boiling water without fear of melting it. If you want to put it in place without removing the speedo cable, and you aren't in for points, just split the grommet.

Here is how you do it correctly...Go to my website www.plucks329s.org then go to Additional Studies...then go to The Evolution of the A-8210 Grommet.

There you will see the "cut" that Ford used on these grommets.

The "cut" is refered to as the "split" on the Ford drawings. This is how most of the grommets like these were installed...they were cut for easy assembling...not heated!

Unfortunatly Carl if you want "points"...it has to be "split". I have never seen an original grommet of this type that wasn't.

My experience has been that the rubber grommets offered by the various suppliers does not fit properly. It does not have enough of a lip to grab the hole in the firewall. Since the speedo cable comes through at an angle it wants to push it out.

I solved my problem by measuring very carefully and referring to a rubber grommet catalog. I purchased a handful of a size that fits better. Since it is difficult and a pain to remove the speedo cable and try to fish it through the grommet hole, I cut the grommet and fitted it around the cable. A coat of Vaseline allowed it to easily slip into place in the firewall hole. I put the cut at the bottom out of sight under the speedo cable and the judges never caught on.

Dog:cool: at'cha survice! Jis cut the "SNORKEL" offen' a cheep plastic funnel, poke the fat end over the nut, greaser up good, stick the grommet in a HOT! cup of JET-FUEL coffee, (Courtesy of Mitch//pa) & SLID'ER ON!!! With my OWN eyes, I saw Ol' Bill out-fox one on Vermin:D

I like the funnel idea to slide rubber grommets over the large nut. I would also use Vaseline with it.

As Pluck said, the original grommets were slit, so they are easy to slip in place.

How tightly around the cable should the grommet fit? The opening in the grommet is very large as compared to the cable unless I am using the wrong grommet. No instructions with the kit..

There you can see and get an idea just what the diameter of the hole in the grommet should be for your cable.

Interesting reading. I see reference to "split" in the drawings. Was the grommet split when it was used in the radiator shell for the headlights or horn?

I might add to this that the NOS speedometer cable grommets that I have are split grommets and the center hole is actually at an angle to accept the cable coming in from below at an angle.

I wonder where they came from. The Ford records show headlamp conduit grommets used for the speedo cable all years. This includes the use of two sizes.

Here is a picture of a couple of the split grommets. The speedo grommets are the slightly larger ones. The have a very faint angle to the center opening. The lower right is a NOS headlight/horn conduit grommet.

So the grommet hole is quite a bit larger than the diameter of the speedo cable... Just thinking of drafts on those chilly mornings.

That's just Ford's Patented, "FLOW-THRU-VENTILATION" Only REAL men drive Model A's & drink WARM beer!!:D----Bill W.

It looks like two '29-31 headlamp conduit grommets and one (smaller) '28-early '29 headlamp conduit grommet. Of course they were also used for the speedo cable during the same period.
