Speedster "Almost a Mercury"

This a re post! I could not get an opinion!!!!

I am pondering purchasing a speedster and am having trouble with a value!
The owner is firm at $10,000.00. He has owned it for about 40 yrs.
The car was used in the 70's in the Long Beach Hill Climbs.

The body style is a boattail very similar to the Mercury!
It has a rectangle not a round trunk lid!
The 5th tire mounts on the rear of the boattail !

I am sure that it is a home built body and frame!

I cannot believe the quality and detail in the body and frame.
The body is CHERRY, 5 nice 21" wheels and tires, perfect seat covering(kind of a two seat combo ONE PIECE TIGHT FIT) dash , steering wheel perfect. no head lights!
The frame is fully boxed and lowered. Every detail is perfect! No rust, nice paint, a few spiders.

The motor has a 22 serial number, he will make it run before sale. Has a distributor, headers, and down draft manifold and carb, Richardo head.

It had been on a non op from 1995! It is registered as a roadster!!
He agrees to get the registration all cleared up. (should be off the CA DMV records) I think that he can get the specil plates due to the title and age.

It looks like a once in a life time deal for me!

I have 4 T's and never have spent $ 10,000 total!( Multiply like rabbits)

I am trying to talk myself out of it!! But!!
Will kick myself in the *****forever!!!

What do you think about a speedster/ roadster, and $10,000.00 in this economy!

Steve
its only money

I had a chance to buy a 65 Ferrari for what, at the time, seemed like a large sum of $5,500 back in the early 70s. I got spooked by a rod knock and didn't.
For almost 40 years I longingly refer to that car "the one that got away."

You either buy it or wait for the next one to come along, which it wont.

It all depends on how bad you want it and what you will do with it. If you have a family and go on tours with the family, the speedster is not for you. If you plan on driving it a lot, a speedster is not the most comfortable thing to drive especially if you are on the tall side.
On the plus side, speedsters are fun. I am in the late sixties and still get my speedster out if I am driving by myself. If my wife is going along, it would take a shoe horn to fit us both in it.
My speedster is what you could call a one person boat-tail. I bought it cause it was cheap and I had a weak monent, if it had been priced higher, I would not have one. I forgot, also no top so it can get darn hot in the summer and wet if it rains.

Nice 21 inch wheels, what kind? Ford from 26-27 are one thing Buffalo's are quite another. Photos would help with the advice, along with details on the engine rebuild. Price sounds good to me, if you have the funds in hand.

Not buffalos but are nice 21" wheels and tires!
Engine is mostly stock now!
Has distributor, headers, downdraft manifold, and high compression (Ricardo) head!
Thank You for your time!
I will try to poast a photo !
I need to repair my 5 Window this weekend!

Sounds like a lot of money for a little car that is not all that useful . For that kind of money you should be able to get a real car. Rember this is NOT a real T it is after all just a home built body . Just playing the devil's advocate, Bubby Sharp in KY

Bubby, talking Steve out of this is not helping the economy. We need to "stimulate" the economy.

There are 3 "real" Ts over on the MTFCA swap site. 19 touring, 26 roadster pickup & a 26 coupe, all reported to be presentable & running well; all under $7000.
This would still stimulate the economy AND keep Bubby happy. He knows what he is talking about - I am sure he has "been there - done that!" Most importantly, Steve would have a T that is a lot of fun.

I feel the need for SPEED!
I already have a 27 roadster, 26 Roadster PU, 26 5 window coup, and a 25 Fordor.
I thought the Speedster would be fun ride! Something like a motorcycle with 4 wheels.
I could feel the wind, and eat a few bugs!
Thanks for all your coments!
Now baxck to the garage to finish the latest weekend breakdown!
The weekends are too short!!
Steve

Attempt at post a few photos!
Remember The car is still in a tight garage abd hasen't seen the light of day in a few years!

I like the one Cris posted photos of, and the wood or leather work on the dash on the second one is nice, but I'm not getting a good feeling about $10,000 for either one.

Steve,

It sounds like you have the T needs covered. If you will enjoy the speedster - buy it!

I can attest that eating bugs & wind at a good speed can be fun. Some manufacturers made speedster like cars way back but you cannot find them for $10,000.
