59 Galaxie 500 Engine Maintenance

Wow, I have been reading a bunch of posts about overflow tubes and rocker shaft oiling issues.
I would like to know as a Y Block newbie, what preventive maintenance or initial cleaning can I do at home on my 81,000 mile original engine? I have recently posted about the knocking sound I am dealing with which sounds like a bent pushrod.
Is there a way of "cleaning" the oil passges/overflow tubes? I have no intentions of racing this car but I am trying to save it from the crusher. I am hoping that I don't have to rebuild the engine.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Dave

Pushrods don't knock. Main and rod bearing do. A clattering or ticking would usually indicate excessive valve lash or other valve train issues.

Thanks old ford guys. Prognosis is looking bad. The noise is not ticking for sure. I took the pass side valve cover off and watched the valve train as the engine idled. Everything seemed to work as normal- nothing looked broken. The small oil tube at the front of the head did not have oil coming out of it- is it supposed to?

The small tube at the front (one side) and at the rear on the other side is supposed to have oil coming out of it. If they don't, it usually means the rocker arm shaft is plugged up. If so, then the rockers are probably not getting oil either. With the engine running and the valve cover off, you should see oil puddling in the lower part of the head and oil around the rocker itself..

However, this would not cause an engine knock.
