Speaking of demagnaflux. About a year ago I stripped an 8BA, after pulling the pan I was near the snout of the crank with a wrench in my hand and the crank grabed the wrench right out of my hand. The wrench would stick to the crank everywhere. A 1/2 ratchet would hang right on the snout of the crank. The engine had been rebuilt years ago and the crank had been mag in one of those big wet magnaflux machine and they didn't demag it. Found a machine shop about 100 miles away that had one of those machines and they demaged for us. Walt

I still have the AC coil for demag and have used it several times when the inspection shops forget. The old Magnaflux "wet" tables with the DC coil and head shot clamps are hard to find in good condition now days and it would be like picking up a 6-foot lathe weight wise. The damn things weigh a ton even after you take the batteries out. A portable DC rig would likely be just as good with someone who knows how to do coil and head shot stuff. Dry powder is as good as wet for most things and you don't need a black light to see the results.

Rotorwrench, I know what you mean, I worked in a shop for 18yr's that had one of those. It had to be about 10 feet long, we did a lot of big deseil engines with big cranks. Pull the hood down and use a black light. It's been 25yr's since I've seen one of those machines, I'm sure thing have changed now. Walt

I worked at a shop in High School, one of my jobs was Magnafluxing "areas" on intakes, heads, and a few areas on block-as I was assigned, but all I had was this large "horse shoe" permanent magnet and a Turkey baster looking thing, without the "tube" on the end.

Makes me wonder now (after seeing there were/are larger equipment) how many cracks went through that shop then?

I have used the armature growler for years, for me they are cheap, the last 2 were given to me, I used to make powder by doing .001-.002 cuts with the boring bar, but now that I bought a can of real powder it is easier to see.
A growler isn't made for a 100% duty cycle, it will get hot with long use, but usually doing the deck of the block won't take too long.

For homemade demagnetizing a loop of #10 wire in one of the larger wattage weller soldering guns will slowly work, also I have used a televison degausser.

I have bid up quite a few magnaflux kits on E-bay, but they have gone for more than I wanted to pay ---eventually one will escape bidders that want it more than me.
