36 pickup gear shift layout

Hello form England

Had a 36 pickup delivered yesterday all the way from Illinois but having trouble finding reverse. It moves forward in 4 positions in an H shape then has a small lever at the top of the gearshift which allows the shifter to move to the far right middle position but nothing happens when letting the clutch out.

Any suggestion please.

Thanks
Keith

Keith, It sounds like you may have a 4 speed ******. Try pulling up on the lever and move the lever to right and down or maybe to left and down, Just a suggestion. kc

Hi Kerk

If I lift the small lever it will allow me to move shifter over to the far right but then won't move forward or back. I may have gearbox fault? I did buy it with a suspected broken U/J but maybe seller thought this was cause?

Thanks
Keith

Can you post a picture of the shifter showing the extra lever?
My 36 truck has a straight handle without a seperate lever.

Here it is. I was expecting a 3 speed trans but it definately selects 4 forward gears?

Push the clutch, pull up the lever, move the shifter all the way to the right and down toward the seat. That is reverse. That a big dump truck trans. Walt

Success, thanks guys. The shaft was jammed under the shifter housing.

Just need to fix the U/J now as its making nasty noises!

Hmmm that doesn't sound like fun!! What cruising speed should I expect?

I have to take the torque tube out to replace the U/J so maybe I should look for another ****** now. What would you recommend. This is my first V8 Flathead so still not sure what fits and what doesn't.

If you use your 1936 Ford Pick up on a farm or drive on rough roads, the 4 speed ****** would be the transmission of choice. If you plan on mostly driving your 1936 pick up at highway speeds and seldom needing a slow granny first gear, then change it out for a three speed with syncromesh gears. You will be glad that you did. They both have their place. On our 40 acre farm, we use our 1946 for pick up daily for farm chores. I took out our three speed syncromesh transmission and installed the four speed. All because the 3 speed ****** wouldn't go slow enough for maneuvering over rough ground. I am very happy with the four speed. Double clutching between gears is required, but I got used to it.

I live on the outskirts of London so going to be used mainly around town and highways. Sounds like the 3 speed with syncro is the way to go. What year did these trannies with syncro run from and would it be a straightforward swap?

If it's a runner, just take off in 2nd gear...2-3-4

Once in 4th, will be the same as 3rd with a 3 speed.

Enjoy before you change it;)
