bought a used 24 stud flathead ford engine for my av-8 project. it has freeze plugs on oil pan surface with 3.18 bore with pistons marked std and 1.99 crankshaft rod diameter. by my research I have a 39 to 40 mercury engine. do you think I am correct? need to get rebuild parts and would like to know what I am dealing with. guy who sold it to me couldn't remember what it came from. do ford rebuilding parts fit the merc engines? thanks randy

Sounds to me like a 39-42 221 engine that's been bored out to take std 3 3/16 pistons.

is it possible for the block to be bored out to that size? that would be .120 overbore. crank journal size is to small for merc crank so maybe it is an overbored ford block or a merc block with ford 1.99 crankshaft.

I bore a lot of them 38-42 blocks to 3-3/16 make a good engine with the A heads. I'm having a little brain cramp, does the 39-42 Merc crank have the 1.999 rod journals like the ford or did they go to the 2.139 journal? Walt

looks like I have a 39 to 40 ford 221 engine block that was overbored to take 3.18 std pistons from a 239 later flathead. I didn't realize you could bore the block that far out. thanks for everyone's help randy

Ron states "My brain doesn't have cramps, but it farts allot."
Could that be from the chili????
