Seat Springs

Anyone know of a way to stiffen up the seat in my 40 Coupe ? The bottom cushion is so soft it feels like Im sitting in the floor and the backrest cushion I can feel the board that runs across the back of the seat. Ive been told that you can remove the cover and put foam rubber inside the coils to help stiffen it up but never tried it. I considered buying new springs from Mac or Lebaron Bonny but the price of them for the 40 has gone through the roof.Anyone out there have a good 40 Coupe seat they want to sell ?

Remove the cover/upholstery and look at the springs. They were tied with string and the strings probably have worn through and you need to re do the ties. I had to do that on my PU seat. Great improvement.

Ken I tied each spring together with wire plus it had a wire net on it when I took the orginial off that stiffened it up Don

The burlap helped keep the cotton padding in shape. Otherwise it would be slowly forced through the springs from use. They didn't use foam back in that time frame.

got the same problem with my truck springs-when we uph them we tied them together, burlap, cotton, etc, even put in extra foam on top, still don't feel stiff enough. I am going to try to "stuff" the springs from the bottom with a stiff foam that has been sort of cut round-with a band saw-I think that will stiffen them up a bit

Well, took my seat apart this afternoon and found several springs skewed sideways not to mention all the burlap that covers the springs was old and rotten. Plan is to straighten all the springs and hog ring them together and go back with new padding , then the cover. Someone had recovered the seat many years ago and put foam padding on top of the springs, all of it was in bad condition and falling apart.I will let ya'll know how it turns out when I get done with it.
