I am currently running the stock 16-in wheels on my 46 coupe but despite having a reverse eye front spring I think it still sits too high both front and back. Going to a smaller 14 inch wheel should lower it however I'm not sure if that would be too small. Appreciate some feedback.
 
I dont think it will clear your brakes. 15" Mercury wheels (47-48) will do the trick, and taking a leaf or two from the pack will get you 1-1 1/2" drop with the 15s.
 
I agree that 14's are a bit small and there would likely be a brake clearance issue. I have 15" Merc rims on my '46 Tudor w/ Coker radials. That alone lowers the car about an inch, maybe a bit more. Have you tried long spring shackles?
 
We used to use VW Bug tires on the front. They were a smaller diameter. I just checked on tirerack.com and the smallest VW tire they had was 185/65R15; which it listed as an option.
 
Thanks and I will start looking for 15's. Where can I find the long spring shackles that will fit?

That cars height looks good, In the Chi town we have speed bumps all over the place, and loose teeth, I actually have to raise mine, I'm only 3" at the tire and 11/2 at scrub. Keep rippin up my exhaust.
 
Back in the sixties we used 58-60 lincoln wheels they were 14" and fit over stock ford brakes of the forties but they didnt have hubcap nubs!
 
Vern Tardel makes them - saw some on e-bay a couple of weeks ago from So-Cal Speed Shop. I've also seen home made ones - which were questionable. Good luck.

Lincoln had 5 lug with 5.5" bolt circle up till 1960.

I have TWO 14" x 6"wide wheels with 5 lug 5.5" bolt circle incase anyone
needs a couple. They DON'T have any nubs to mount small hubcaps.
I will sell them for $45 + shipping for the pair.
I can email a picture if someone can use them, just PM me. :)
