looking for a trunk lock plug

Hi,

When i bought my 31 A back with my dad in the late 60's it had a trunk.
As I got older and knew the car better I realized that the trunk was originally a rumble seat and the trunk floor was set for a seat. Last year I finally found a seat top and bottom out of a 29. Same frames but the vinyl is smooth not the same pattern as a 31 but due to the condition I am keeping it. I am ready to do the 're convert back to rumble seat but I can't find a rubber lock hole plug they sold back in the day. It really saved on body work. It popped right into the hole that the handle lock hole made. Does anyone here know where I can get I can get one before I drill the lock hole on the other side?

Thanks

You might try h/depot or loew's in the hardware section. Might come up with a plastic or metal type plug there. Most here would probably tell you to keep the trunk aspect. FWIW

lowes has s/s push in plugs of many sizes . I have several pluging misc holes . work well ............

If you have an Ace in town they have an isle of yellow trays filled with all kinds of specialty items. I have purchased several of the s/s plugs for other items in the past. I used one to fill that hole that is found in almost every dash rail.

Are you sure yours was originally a rumble? I think the floor is same for both. I don't think I have every seen a coupe, trunk or rumble, that didn't have a seat riser (and the holes for the rumble hinge, and the side panels).

For me, the tell would be a slot at the top center of the trunk (below the window) for the rumble latch to secure to.

Other's will likely know better than me. Am I right?

Yes your right! They all came with the seat riser and everything on the body so they could be set up either way.

To the OP. you might want to think twice about converting away from a trunk. My coupe is a trunk and its easy to get into and I can't imagine a rumble seat being very useful.

KGBnut and Tiny are quite right.

Another place to look for your plug, is in the plumbing dept. of any hardware or plumbing store. They have metal plugs of all sort - with crinkled tabs, like a hubcap. Generally they are chrome, but you can sand and paint them to any color.

I need to have a rumble seat in my coupe as a necessary adjunct to my hauling people around, while doing architectural tours with paying clients. However, as I also drive my '31 Coupe as my daily 'driver', I run a great many errands that need hauling space. The rumble-seat works O.K., but a real trunk would at times work so much better.

My 1928 Chevrolet Landau coupe had a trunk (noticeably larger than a Ford Model A's) and I found it very useful; however, the rear-mounted spare caused loading and unloading issues. If you have a trunk instead of a rumble-seat, I would recommend mounting your spare on your Driver-Side front fender.
