I bought a power antenna for my 1999 Olds 88 yesterday at the junkyard. I also found about 40 feet of 1/2" double braided nylon rope and a long cloth bungee cord. I was charged $5 for everything, and the cheapest I could find just the replacement mast was $60 on ebay. He set the price and I feel good.:D It helps to make up for the bad part I was sold the last time I went there, and that's better for him since it beats crusher weight prices.

Omittance of the truth is a lie. Buying anything based on a lie is moral theft.

If I were buying something from someone who knew nothing about what they were selling and I knew what it was, I'd feel compelled to tell them before buying. If I didn't tell them it would be the same as stealing.

It's his business to know so I would not feel a moral obligation to do his job. Business is business.

And this a little different.

It is USED - and while likely he will give you your money back if it doesn't work, he may not have another.

And he competes with the junkyard up the road which is an "Auto Recycling Center," and charges 3x the price - but they remove it from the car for you.

And he may have a surplus of this part, which possibly rarely fails, and EVERY junkyard has skads of them.

But all this you don't know - and he is in the better position to know.

And then there was the steering column that I bought from "Honest John Bradley" of Allenstown, NH, who is a professional restorer and now winding down his business and activity.

But John was "prolific" in his acquisition of Model A parts when he was more active. A large part of the now gone Pages Model A of Haverhill, NH ended up in Honest John's purview.

So he has this steering column. It has the wheel off, but the spark/throttle lever/segments are there. And even has the pitman arm attached. And it can be turned from end to end and it feels like it should all the way through it's travel.

BUT - it has a nice dent along one side of the metal column. A SERIOUS dent you might say. But its functional. John explains it was used on a doodle bug and the owner got it ******* in a cable which ultimately pulled the doodle bug over on it's side. But again. The column is in my hand and it's functional.

I'm a little tight in real life. OK. Maybe more than a little. I'm thinking he wants possibly $25 for this. OK maybe $30 as the box seems tight. Good boxes go for typically $25 and this without all the extra do-dads.

I was prepared to offer $15 as an opener to discussion . Possibly to escalate up to $20 to achieve the sale. I did say tight, you remember.

"John - how much do you want for this steering column?"

"Oh that - um. You got $5? It's been sitting there all morning and I'm trying to get rid of the stuff in the truck before I head home."

Time and situation and dollars coincided once again. I think my wallet approached light speed as it left my pants pocket.

But John more than made up for his nickname.

Brought home, I disassembled the sheet metal portion of the column. Put the sheet metal over a piece of 1-1/4" metal shafting, and used that like an anvil to pound out the dent and straighten the tube. It was a nice save.

We wear our reputation... John wears his like Fred Astaire.

I applaud you for your honesty values. Most of our forum members have like values and I feel at home with those forum members. SSsssteamer

In some states they call this 'Improper disposition of property lost or misplaced" depending on the value of the item it could be a crime. If UPS delivers a parcel to your home by mistake doesn't mean it's yours even if it's in a Brattons or Snyders box.

I've heard of some who will advertise an item for what seems a great price just to test the market with no real intention of selling at their asking price. They may keep track of the calls for awhile & reply that the item sold, but might take the callers' info "just in case the original buyer reneges on the deal...". If enough interest, either they or one of their shills might then relist the item at a higher price & see what happens.

While many of us are honest, there are many buyers and sellers who have no conscience when it comes to what's right and what isn't.
