Babbit condition / should I

So this winter I am thinking about pulling my moter and giving her a freshin up my idea is to basically put on motor Stand pull oil pan and head knock piston rod caps and knock pistants on out and though a new set of rings and rehome the cylinder walls. My only concern is condition of babit. When Iv cleans out my oil pan last ( done it twice ) when I bought it 5 years ago and a year and two years ago when I had a pan gasket leak I only found some sand like gritty Babbitt in bottom of pan nothing bigger than a medium size peice of sand. What do you think the odds are that my babit will remain in one peice if I do this. I know some times it's craced but stays together just becouse its blamed around the crank. ??

Thanks,

Derek G.

I use this handy calculator to determine an engine's condition prior to teardown.

Ya I know problem is no cash for rebuild that's why I was hoping only to freshen her up! no worries about the lady's complaint though cuz the only two woman I have in my live are my model a an my old panhead lol and the pan can say jack cuz she's almost done getting a full restore (thus the no money lol)

If the babbit is bad, it's going to be the center and rear main caps. It takes time to replace these caps, but it can be done if you can find caps that are close to the right size. The process involves checking clearances and scraping babbit by trial and error until the proper clearance is achived. If the rod babbit is bad, repoured rods are available. On my friend Richard's slant window sedan, the center main cap was cracked so we replaced it with one from my stash of junk. It's still running quiet and good.

Thanks glen that's what I was hoping to here.

If its doing ok leave it alone.

The reason I'm doing this is I know they need adjustment I drove her for 2 years as my daily driver 150mile-250 mile a day no less sometimes more combanating with a road trip from ma to the top of novascocaia down to Ontereo over to the maine cost then back to Nh and home. After that the breaks were getting real bad and she was feeling sluggish so I let her retire for a year when I picked up an old cj. For a driver. And started te restore on my harley and delt with some good med issues. So she defiantly needs it. btw as my driver she saw the normal freeway everyday. Wasn't going to tell her she was to old for it ( even though I know a few of you around here would screem blasphemy!
