Hey guys....you Kiwis okay down there? We saw the news report stories about your big earthquake...hope everyone's okay. Please check in and let us know...our prayers are with you...!

Thanks for your concern Freddie, we are about 1000Km from the earthquake zone this time. Tudortom who posts, lives in Christchurch which was the affected area amd he reports that he has fared ok, although widespread devastation in the city itself. A lot of the damage seems to be on heritage buildings that had not been strengthed. We are lucky here that since the 1931 quake that destroyed Napier, we have led the world in earthquake proof buildings the building regulations are pretty severe, and for good reason. There have been some amazing pictures emerging of strets being uplifted 2-3 feet, and huge cracks running for miles in the direction of the earthquake. The pictures are from the 1931 Napier Earthquake (279 Died)

Hi Freddie, Thanks for the post, I, like Bick am in the North Island a long way from Christchurch. I found out today family down there have lost their house. Your prayers are appreciated. Richard

I'm in Napier, probably about 400+ miles from the earthquake area. I have just been on the phone to my buddy there, and he said damage was really random. His house was perfectly OK, but the house next door lost it's chimney.
On a lighter note, his brother has had a ranch slider door that has been sticky.... it now works perfectly!:)

Thanks for your thoughts
I like the others now live in the North Island so missed this one. I went to school in Christchurch it is a beautiful city with lots of old heritage buildings many of which apppear to have been damaged. Fortunately no one was killed which given the apparrent damage is a miracle . I guess sometimes our prayers are answered before we ask them .

In the 31 Napier Earthquake that Bick is talking about my Grandfather drove an earthmover from Palmerston North to Napier on the day of the quake to help with the clean up. It took him 8 hours as he had to cope with huge cracks in the road but made it and was one of the first outsider help to arrive . He used to tell the story of the Ford Dealership building which had collapsed on the showroom cars . The Dealer said to him "If you can get one out it's yours" but he said it was to dangerous to even try. Karl

Hi everyone
I live in Christchurch and there are parts that have been hit worse than others. Central city has been devastated and some areas are still without water and power. Thankfully no deaths probably because of the time it struck - all we can do is thank God that it was not during the day when those buildings and streets would have been full of people.
Most people are faring well. The aftershocks are scarey and still going, we only felt one a few minutes ago.
Thanks all for your concerns.

Some people felt a shake in Wellington, when the Chch quake struck, but no damage here. My wife spent all of Saturday chasing up relatives in the Canturbury region, who are all OK.

Nelson was not affected although only 150 miles as the the A flys, Had our big one in 68, Bed rolled across the room , hit the wall then rolled back, Thought I was in heaven then found it was a quake,Bugger , took the rollers off , More reports coming in all the time & it will take Billions $ to fix, There will be some good come from it , As the tex said With the collapse of Canterbury finance company recently, never expected it to take Christchurch with it . ( KIWI JOKE) Will see & catch up with all the Ford folk there at the big swap meet in few weeks, Derek from a damp Nelson.

I live in Christchurch, & we are still getting 'aftershocks' as I post this. Have seen lots of road damage today & some houses also. But I have not been very far, just near where we live in New Brighton & Avonside area.
Our local streets flooded due to burst pipes but a day after the 'quake struck, I took the Model A out to check on my Dad. Roads I went were undamaged & all was well.
We are well used to big 'quakes in NZ & the Model A's have felt the '29 Murchison one; Napier in '31; Inangahua in '67 & now this one here in Canterbury.
Cheers
Tom

Good to hear everyone seems to be OK... Stuff is just that - STUFF. You can get more stuff...hell, I'll send you some of MINE! But...folks are another matter...can't always get new "folks"...!

My thoughts and prayers are with you guys...take care...better days are comin'! :)

Hope all goes well. If you guys need anything let the Barn know. You have plenty of friends here. Thing is I know you guys are tough and self reliant, but just in case, we are here for you or anyone you know who needs some assistance. Just let us know.

The only really good thing about disasters is time and time again they demonstrate just how good 99.9% of humanity is. How people stick together and help each other out in such times never ceases to restore my faith in mankind and the future of all of us stuck together on this little ball of rock spinning through space Thanks to you all -Karl
