Last couple of times I have driven the car I smell a lot of gas right after start. This has happen with or WITHOUT choking. After driving a very SHORT distance the smell goes away. I have checked the shut-off, the line that goes to it and where it is attached at the firewall inside, the fuel filter bowl, the line running from the filter bowl to the carb. and also the carb. None of these showed any sign of leaking or smell of gas. So the question is;

WHERE IS THE SMELL COMING FROM????? :mad:

Thanks for your time.

Since you see no leaks, etc, "maybe" it's just accumulated smells in the engine compartment from the carb vent & the throat. After starting, "maybe" the fumes creep into the car, until they're "aired out"?? When parked with the windshield open, gas fumes from the cap sometimes get into the inside of the car also, especially in hot weather. Bill W.

RHD - Thanks for your suggestion as I hadn't checked the column mount but unfortunately no weep or leak.

Bill Willamson - Unfortunately I don't live in CA to have that problem. However I never park the car with the windshield open and seldom open it at all. But thanks for the thought!

Thanks for your time.

my first thought was what rhd mentioned. another common spot and sometimes not noticeable is the gauge gasket...

That was my thought, It could be leaking from the gauge and a small amount is in back of the Dash, it might be evaporating as fast as it is leaking...so far.. Does not take much fuel to smell in a closed cab.
