Main stud removal

In this '36 engine I am working on, the studs that hold the main caps on spin freely. Only one nut has actually unscrewed off the stud. I'm wondering if there are any tricks or anything that I am missing to get these out. Thanks.

If the nut and stud are turning, what is happening is that the stud is unscrewing outta the block. Just keep going, the whole lot will come out, then you can hold stud in a vise or something and unscrew the nut.

It didn't appear to me that the stud was screwing out, more or less that it is stripped, but I'll keep going with it. It didn't take much at all to unscrew these studs so it would surprise me if they were stripped.

Seems that I remember some of the early motors had main bolts that went down through the top of the block. Could that be what is turning? Just an idea to check.

Barn junk raises a very good poimt; those early motors run long bolts from inside the valve chamber. However, a 35-36 block has studs

Are you sure it's a 36 block? The 32-3-4- blocks have long bolts that go down from the valve spring area and a 1/2in. nut on the end that holds the main cap. The bolts are down in a hole in the valve spring area on each side, the hole is usually filled with gunk so you have to dig for it, they have square heads. Walt

That is very possible, I thought about that but didn't think they would use a long bolt in that area. I'll go look for it. Thanks.

This has been well covered by 38coupe in his block ID thread . Simple way to tell on yours - is it vented ? Does it have cam bearings ? 32-34 blocks have neither a vent nor cam bearings . Again this has been WELL covered already with many pics .

A bit terse don't you think... when the answer takes just seconds.
