took the truck out for a ride yesterday had two events happen and not sure why either happened but thought i could share to maybe avert someone else having a similar experience . was coming down a long gentle grade hill doing 40 traffic ahead so i hit the brakes......... no brakes:eek::eek::eek: ....pedal on the floor,,,,, what the H!!L was working at the last traffic light! pull the parking brake which also doubles as the emergency brake in this instance ... tire grabs the asphalt smoked rubber loud screech other cars scattered and i slowed down quick pulled over lifted the floor boards and find NO Clevis pin WTH ! i know that pin was there with the clip on it but it sure wasnt now! stuck a nut and bolt on it and went to the hardware store for the pin , Got The Pin put it IN. Back on the road again! mile down the road now and than the engine quits , i smell gas... the mute guy pan handling at the corner is looking at me ..gesturing a pumping motion , i smell more gas and traffic is lined up behind me . get the hood open , see a carb thats all wet and shut off the fuel valve , grabbed a wrench pulled off the bottom of the carb and see a full reservoir and the float sitting in it , how that happened i can not say , as you know the pin that holds the float goes through the holes on the holder and as best as i can tell can not move side to side to extract itself when the unit is together. head scratching , put it back together and went down the road . so i guess even the things we are sure are fine, can be Not Fine from all of the vibrations and road jiggling ! so heads up CHECK YOUR BRAKE CLEVIS PINS AND KEEPER CLIPS . Happy Motoring!:)

I'd say someone is out to get you.

Have you made any enemies lately?

Life insurance paid up?

:D

You mentioned "keeper clips", are these hitch pins or some other type of clip that can come out. You should use cotter pins that can't come out if bent properly.

Yes, I too was wondering about that?

Also, after that panic stop it might be worth pulling the rear drums to see if any damage was done. When I bought my 28 one of the parking brake stops was torn and bent inward an inch by someone applying it while the car was moving.
As you found out, the parking brake is very self-energizing and can put a lot of force on the stop tabs.

Hello Rolling,

Were you using those hitch pin type clips on the clevis pins instead of a cotter pin? I thought of using them but decided staying with the tried and true cotter pins, glad you saved the day.

I also fell victim to the short float pin, some Zenith have a clip in float hinge, I made a longer one from welding rod.

TOO SLOW TYPING SORRY TO DUPLICATE.

Add to what Tom said- Also check the rear wheels for cracks. L/R wheel on the Tudor developed 2 nasty cracks after a similar parking brake lockup "panic stop". Had to replace the wheel.

Every 6 months when I go for a warrant-of-fitness in my open pickup the testing guy requires me to drive him around the block to see everything is working OK. Each time he insists that I test the brakes with an emergency panic stop, with him holding a kinetic energy testing machine in his lap. Each time I burn rubber and nearly put him through the windscreen. I have done this twice a year now for 20 years without any sign of it damaging anything. At least not that I am aware of. :)

Just because you can panic stop does not mean the brakes are good and after 20 years i think its time to pull 4 wheels

hi guys yup the clevis pin had a cotter pin on it so i really do not know what happened with that situation.i have not done any work to that area for well over 2 years and find it hard to think the cotter broke off by wear .the truck is a AA so i doubt any damage to the drum but brakes will be taken apart to ck the brake band and look for scoring that may have happened , i used several quick engage and release movements to slow the ol boy down.

shaman indeed and for more than just the truck these days, hope your making out well with the weld on spindle nut , i did that last spring and had to grind off the nut with a jewelers diamond dremel bit, was truley an ugly experience it would not turn , took 2 days of grinding and chisling i was lucky not to ruin the threads , oh and the replacement nut was a trick to find too since they dont do a repro one for AA spindle had to use a nut that is made for TT diff housing as i recall. i have a friend who is a guru with A's and knew they were the same size and brought over a repro one from his stuff . Always learning!
