'39 Ford Battery?

Do I have to get a reproduction battery from one of the Ford suppliers, or is there a battery I can buy locally for less than $230? The guy I bought the car from installed a new group 2 6V battery but it's 1 1/4" too high. I have a new battery tray and hold down that requires a battery 7" high. Thanks in advance for your help again.

You should be able to locate a suitable 6 volt battery at a Tractor Supply or any good auto parts store. You most likely will have to order it from the auto parts store but tractor Supply may have one in stock. You could also go with an Optima 6 volt, you can get "battery cases" that the Optima will fit in, they (the cases) look like original style batteries.

Thanks Vic but no luck. I tried Tractor supply and they didn't have one the correct size. I spend 25 minutes on the phone with Interstate Battery to find out they didn't have one either. So I'm still hoping that someone can give me a supplier and a part number. Thanks,

NAPA is a good source. They have two different 6V ones. One is taller than the other and lends itself to the dummy top works kit that is available. Kit + decals to replicate an old battery for roughly 100 + 26 for dummy "kit". g

Just got off the phone with local NAPA and the shortest battery they have is 8 3/4" tall. I need 7 7/8" including post or 7" case only.

Check with Autozone, They sell Duralast batteries and i have had better luck with them than any other. A 5 year battery some times last 7 years. Interstate has been the worst. I hope Duralast makes a 6 volt Battery. Marv

Marv,
You missed the point. I'm looking for a battery that will fit in my stock '39 Ford Deluxe. Duralast doesn't make one., but thanks for the reply. Tomorrow I will buy one of the overpriced specialty batteries since I can't find anything else.

Someone mentioned here a while back that a 6V battery from NAPA for an early VW, the one that fits under the rear seat, is comparable in size to the low battery original to your '39.

Beautiful '39 Vert. If I could have my choice of cars it would be one of those. Did a little checking and that battery would probably work although it's 2" shorter in length. I found a battery at Summit that I can pick up today with Ford script. Expensive but not as bad as Macs etc. Thanks guys for all the help.

Where can you get or who supplies the battery cases that look like original style batteries? Last I checked Antique Auto Battery would not sell me a empty battery case.

37 Coupe, I bought a "Battery Case" to house an Optima 6 volt. to use in our '39 CS several years ago, I don't remember where I got it. Here's a picture of it (sorry, not very good quality) but it has no markings of manufacturer on it.

The 2LF is the low battery, 2HF the high. Optima used to fit inside a gutted 2LF until they increased the height due to an internal shorting problem on the earlier batteries. I had an old Ford script 2LF from Antique Battery that I gutted to insert the optima, but that no longer works with the higher optima.
