have a '35 five-window coupe with dual exhausts. engine is a ''37 flathead with cast heads. original three-speed transmission.
any suggestions on mufflers to give it the best sound?

I like the Red's Headers, Brockman Mellow-Tone steel packed muffler combo myself, it all depends on the sound you want. Give Brockman's a call and tell them how you want your car to sound, they will custom make a set of mufflers for you. they do excellent work at a reasonable price. Enjoy the music!

You got it Randy, straight pipes and stock skinny tail pipes. Not as loud as you would think, nice mellow tone.ken ct.

I have Reds headers twin 1 3/4" pipes, not sure if my manifold cross over is blocked? But straight pipes on mine got to me after a while. Did sound like a small motor trying too hard. Just recently put 12" resonators in, they are open perferated glass packs. Fair bit Quieter still has a little sound though..

I have duals with Cherry Bombs & I add MMO to my gas / had the same set up on the 40 Ford PU I drove 19 years & I think the sound mellows as the system ages with use & accumulation of SOOT. I wonder if it has anything to do with the MMO Soot or if the sound is just sweeter cause Im getting hard of hearing. It seems to RAPP more with age too. I never feel a need to turn on a Radio running a Flathead #%^^&$/?? I also like when I pull into a show & somebody comments on how My 36 sounds. Nice to know its not only Me!

Wonder if it has anything to do with my choice of exhaust tips?

What do they call that style tip? Looks like a horizontal fishtail? Their old school cool, regardless.

Thing is with exhausts, the driver usually doesn't hear the tone. Maybe if you drive under a bridge and you can hear the echo.

I have Red's headers and Porter mufflers. Doesn't sound loud at all. Occasional firecracker backfire coming off throttle.

Running Flowmaster Series 40s with full exhaust and crossovers on a 351C. Just a little drone coasting at highway speeds. Folks behind me have said the system sounds good without being obnoxious.

Speaking of obnoxious, my favorite was an 390 FE motor with Cherry Bomb glass-packs dumping out the side in front of the rear wheels, no crossover. Never failed to turn some heads cranking it up to 5,000 rpm (mild Erson Street-Strip cam)

I knew the Harley was tuned right when it set off car alarms just putting through the parking lot:D

I have Red's Headers and Smitty's with pennies in the heat risers on my `35 Cabriolet and love the sound. Not too loud, just a mellow rumble. But they will not rap and I wish they would....

I you want to hear Rapp & Popping. Put a Y in our Vaccuum hose & run a hose inside with a Air bleader on the end and adjust the vaccuum at will:) You"ll be able to get it Rapping & Popping in third gear by letting off on the gas pedal at about 40 MPH. I discovered this when I had a Vaccuum leak in my Wiper motor setup:(

The exhaust tips I have are called Exhaust -- Deflectors in MACs Catolog.
I find I hear the exhust tone best with my top down:(

We used to take the vacuum hose off of the wiper motor to make it pop. Wonder what conditions make one rap? Many years ago I paid a ticket for `rapping'. I wound it up pretty tight and backed off while going under an under pass. Cop was parked just outside the under pass. Did not appreciate the sweet music.
