48 distributor on 37 221ci motor

By matching plate, if you mean the adapter, yes it will fit. The 48 distributor reaches deeper into the front cover, so it needs to be spaced out with the adapter, which also provides for the two bolt mounting.
 
The 37 engine gets dist vacume from 1 of 2 psssages in the intake. A crab dist gets vacume from a passage in the block.Not sure if this will work,maybe some one else would know more. Yes it can be bolted on but where would it get vacume for the advance mecinisem??for dist and wipers??? ken ct.

Ken, the adapters on the market, include the vacuum fitting as part of the engineering of the adapter.
 
In a word yes ..BUT .. with a "adapter plate" add to that more oil leaks ... the adapter plate may need a drive button, if your engine has been rebuilt and the cam changed, to something later ??? best to get a two bolt timing cover for 42 to 48 engine, and be correct The crab will bolt right to it. and the vacuum port is right too..... OLD....BILL
 
If the motor was previously running with a three bolt distributor, and you take it off and fit a three bolt to two bolt adaptor, the crab type two bolt distributor will then fit on and run.
