License Plate Warning !

Greetings,

I just bought another car and was looking for Year of Manufacture plates. I saw one advertised on eBay. It was quite expensive, but looked great, was a low number 3 digit plate; and he said in the posting the it cleared the RMV for ROM plates. If all else failed he offered a 14 day money back guarantee.

I got the plate and went to registry to find out the plates were no good, and had not been for years.

He refused all my emails.

I finally got eBay involved, they threatened to close his account for excessive negative feedback. But it was 2 weeks of hell waiting at the RMV for 2 hours, emails, and eBay forms.

I finally got my money back. He has now changed all his auctions to "All sales final, no returns or refunds"

Please do not buy anything from License Plate King from Castleton, Vermont.

He has had many complaints, and is noted for doing this sort of thing.

Please beware.

Jim, the Year of Manufacture law allows you to use plates from the rear of your car. My 1915 Ford is registered with a 1915 plate on it. But to use an old plate, its number can't already be in use for some other vehicle. If the number isn't currently being used, your old plate is "clear", or "good", and you can use it.

Please explain " No good and haven't been for years ".

When you apply for 'Year of manufacture' plates, you have to find a number that nobody else is using, regardless of year. So if someone has a 1928 plate # 1234, you cannot use that number. This man stated that the plate was checked and 'clear' or available.
He charged almost $300 and when I went to the RMV they said that mot only is this number in use, it has been in use for several years.
I have been contacted by several other people he has done this to. He has over a thousand ad's on eBay.
When I filed a complaint, eBay was quick to respond, he has had many complaints.
Now I have been educated on how to check for myself. All states are different.
My warning is this person purposly deceived me, and has done it to many others.

Thank you for the reply. I guess that it applies to purchasing one plate only. Maybe that person would like to have it's mate. Just saying.

For the benefit of anyone else reading this thread, please go to the Model A section and see my reply regarding Mr. Fretta's business practices. I've met him at a couple ALPCA national conventions and I'm not impressed. There are some people who participate in a hobby because of their love of the hobby, and then there are those who just want to exploit the business angle of things. I'll let you guess which catagory he falls into...

That's not exactly how it works.
If you are using a 1959 plate with No. 1234, Nobody can use that number, regardless of the year.
MIKE :)

I bought a matching set for my A at a flea market. Ran the numbers and they were used. The government doesn't go year to year they look at the number. For instance my plates are B9260 and are stamped 1930. A brand new Ford Focus or whatever they make now can have the exact same numbers on it and it makes my original plate null and void.

Thank you for the enlightenment. Wow I didn't know that. I have three sets one for my 59 Corvette one for my Late 31 Ford Tudor Sedan Deluxe and one for my 27 ford runabout (Hot Rod). I sold the 34 3Window many years ago and didn't know about YOM then. Jim.T.

In California the plate also has to have the year marked on it. So all the 1912 and earlier unmarked as to year plates are ineligible for use. States differ, check out your plate with your state.
Also, despite any statement an Ebay seller may put in his auction, almost all items are returnable. There are very few exceptions, check it out with ebay.

Gee... guess what else? The plate(s) have to be in the original NON RE-PAINTED condition as well... at least up here. ws

Bill, that's the same goofy law they have in New York. So how do they know whether it's restored or NOS? Are you expected to take a pristine original and bang it up so they know it's old? Meanwhile, in Washington state YOM plates must be restored. No man's life and property are safe while the legislature is in session.

In California also.

And in Ohio they don't even care if they're the original colors. I've seen a few that the owners had painted to match their cars. Go figure...

Ours have to be the exact original color, which changed by year. You must send in a picture of the plates and they must be in very very good original or restore condition.

Fortunately Kansas politicians have concentrated their idiocy in other directions and our YOM law is relatively sane and simple. I can restore my plates and get them registered with no hassle.

Just make sure yer checkbook is velcroed into yer pocket when you do the 2 hour hand stand in the YOM line at the DMV! ws
