Ford banjo rear end issue.

I just rebuilt my 37' axle complete with NOS axles. the hubs are 42'. the hubs are tightened down and it looks like I have the wrong hubs or axle, what gives?

Could be the axel bearings are wrong. Looks like it is disassembly time in ????? where ever you are located.

You need to include a state and town in your postings where people know where you are. There may be a Barn member right up the street or in the next block who could help you out. Just a suggestion.

I take it that its sitting right on the taper and you can see the back of the drum right up too the backing plate? Yes some mis-matched parts there somewhere...

how the drum is sitting relative to the backing plate will tell you what is wrong.

If the drum is standing off the backing plate and maybe a bit ****-eyed might indicate the keyway is not in the hub properly, or the seals not setting in place ncorrectly, or something else not letting the hub go fully home. If the drum is pulled hard against the backing plate so it will not turn, and is square to it, would indicate the axles are the wrong ones and are too short.

It's nothing to do with the hubs or backing plates, they will fit all years.

If it would help I could get a dimension from the axle housing to the end of the taper, at the base of the thread. That should be pretty similar in all applications. Let me know if you want me to do that.

The story on the axle is, it was taken out of a 37 ford back in the 40's because it had 4.44 gears.

driver side tube has a part number 68-4046

I'm getting approximately 3-1/2" from the end of the casing to the shoulder at the end of the taper/beginning of the threads.

Looks like you have too short axles in there, which, if it is a 37 type housing would suggest 33/34 axles.

It is a shame because everything looks in great condition.

Seems to me you could measure the length of your old axles can you not?
You stated you are rebuilding your old rearend/axles as you say.

The rear is a 37-38 I don't need to measure the old ones and I don't have them anyway.

Z,
Always a bit of sunshine on a cloudy day....those 'short' axles sure look
pristine and should fetch decent $$$$ from the right guy. Good '35 - '38 axles are
abundant....I've got some nice used ones but I'll bet Dick Spadaro has a stash of
NOS.

Key is too far up on the taper. You end up like you are! Remove the key and try...easiest approach before resorting to plan "B". Just sayin
