Battery Question; Removing acid before storage?

I wish the AACA and other clubs would lighten-up on the battery requirement... maybe not to the point of allowing naked Optimas, but at least allowing a plain black-case battery ?

Perhaps give "extra credit" for a historically accurate battery...

AACA doesn't dock points (as far as I know) for let us say a Garfield 6.00 x 16 WWW tire (on an appropriate vintage vehicle), even though the new Garfields have a very modern design script on their side-wall...

They way it stands with battery standards, do 1915 vintage "electric" T's and other brass cars have to have batteries with finger-jointed wooden cases ?

Frank, in reality they have lightened up ...to the point they don't care if you have a correct battery or not, --but if you do not, you lose 20 points. Anymore you are scrambling for every point that could be had. This car at Lexington needed 425 points to get his Master. Even with many the things corrected on the car since last year, it only "eeked" by scoring 430.

As far as a 1915 T, they did not have a battery from the factory then. My '15 starts & runs off of the magneto (hand crank). Folks had the option to buy a hot-shot battery to install that would allow the coils to buzz.

NOT really true Brent..Optima yes.... but
Batteries we judged VERY VERY loosely....did it have a ford script? "YES" full points in Lexington....:D

I bought a 6 V battery from Sears in 1975 and used it for a year, very lightly. I drained it, washed it, and inverted it to drain and dry when I went away to school. In 2008 I refilled it and charged it to use as a spare, bench battery and jumper and it seemed to work fine for starting and was OK on a load tester. However when I acquired an old Optima to use for the same purpose I drained the acid again, rinsed it, and dried it and it is in storage now. I use the drained acid to sharpen old files and horse-shoeing rasps.

Over here we have Epsom salts put a sprinkle in each cell it eats away the build up that builds up .

If you look up restoring lead acid batteries you will find a procedure that includs adding hot epsom salt solution to the battery to restore it to good health.
