Hi, Folks;
Building my first Flathead, a '51 8BA. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I tried searching the forum and got nowhere.
I admit it, I screwed up. Crank is installed, timing gear installed, I'm running the one-piece "modern" front seal as opposed to the rope. I got the smooth (not spiral grooved) sleeve for the seal lip to run on. It was not a tight fit on the crank nose, actually, it would turn easily by hand. So I got some bearing retainer stuff made by Loctite and got it on there really good and tight. When I was done I was horrified to discover that I didn't install the sheet metal oil slinger on first.

Now it will be damned near impossible to remove the sleeve to install the slinger without making a mess or damaging the sleeve or crank nose.
Just how important is that oil slinger? This is the first engine type that I've rebuilt that had anything like that, so I was wondering if anyone leaves the slinger off when running the modern seal (he pleads, hoping upon hope).
Thanks.
