Swapping Carbs

Hello All, I am new here! Just picked up a 49 Merc. It has a Rochester 4Jet with the linkage on the pass side. I want to install a 390cfm Holley. I think that the linkage might have to be on the drivers side. At this moment, I am not sure if my linkage is stock. Been searching for pics to compare. Anyone know what I need and what to do? Thanks Rich

49 Merc is diff from all other Mercs or Fords. Its a 1 yr only quirck the throttle linkage is setup from the factory to push toward the radiator to open. NO other F or M is this way. Its all it the throttle arm on the carb 49 has the connecting ball above the throttle shaft, all others have it below the shaft. Watch what your doing. ken ct.

Thanks ken ct. What you say is true. Are there any kits or tricks to move the linkage to the driver side to match the Holley?

Not to hijack this thread, but I don't have access to my truck regularly and I need to fab passenger side throttle linkage for 2x2. New carbs have the ball style throttle lever.
Are most of these linkages, like the turnbuckle thing in the picture, 3/16ths? what thread type etc. so I can make sure I have the dies.
I know I can't fit it till I have the truck home, but want to try and assemble enough stock to be able to swap intakes, cut some rod to size, cut some threads and start setting up timing.
I'm hoping I can buy the end for the ball end throttle lever somewhere

Thanks

(oh yeah, and swap distributors)

Mount the carb backwards (carbs are stupid) and mount the linkage on the bottom to pull. This works great and you won't have a problem.

Rich here, Thanks to all for the imput. To Bossy, I like the idea of mounting the carb backwards. Does that really work? I actually thought of that but then thought if I were being stupid. To bk53 I don't mind you using my thread, as we are all here for good conversation, ideas and help. I just had my Rochester 4GC rebuilt, but it seems to be worse than b-4 the rebuild. I have a miss at all speeds. I am running a Mallory ZB with dual points. The points are 24205 hard to find. I have a set on the way from Belmont Rod and custom, He says he has what will work. The carb is a 7004300 it might be from a 52 53 cad. Not that it makes a difference. I removed the 2 piece Mallory cap and went with a Ma5 and new wires no change. Still the miss is there. I have read good things about Bubba, and I am seriously thinking about having him do a conversion to electronic. I have a spare brand new 2 piece Mallory cap, and 2 new MA5 caps. I just need to choose which look I want. I still believe I have a carb problem, and not so much distributor. A friend of reminded me that sometimes carbs just become non- rebuildable. I like the idea of the 390cfm Holley from what I have read here and other places. Please any more thoughts!!! To ken ct thanks again for your imput and thoughts........ Rich

Miss at all rpm levels seems to point to ignition. Points rely on a good condenser to operate properly or they will pit & burn very quickly. Condensers aint what they used to be so I usually buy several at a time in order to insure I get at least one good one. Stay away from old stuff. They were mostly made with wax paper and can't take the heat plus they are just old tech. Any newer one with modern mylar or something besides wax paper is good.
