Wiper motor replacement

I just found out that the inside mount vacum wiper motor on my 30 Deluxe roadster is not rebuildable.:(

Can anyone suggest a source for a working original replacement or decent aftermarket unit. thank you..GC

I too would like to know some sources (other than Snyders and Brattons) for wiper motor replacement parts. I'm just finishing rebuilding an OD-C3. I've fabricated some replacement parts myself but would like to know of some spare parts sources.

What parts did you have to fabricate? On the standard Model A wiper just about all the major wear components are remade. Brattons and Macs have the complete repair kit listed for under $30. A complete wiper is listed for around $175.

How is it not rebuildable? Just about all the components are remade.

I think you are confused. A vacuum wiper generally has a pot metal housing that warps from element exposure. The machining process is too expensive and so they are generally considered not rebuildable.

Snowbird, the last Deluxe wiper assembly that I knew that was available was $750 as it was a NOS replacement unit that was camouflaged to look authentic and then was plated. It was a nice facsimile to an original unit. I would expect to pay near that price for a good chrome plated unit. Another option would be to purchase Gary Johnson's unit and either have it plated as-is, -or do some work to make it appear more original in aesthetics. You can look at Gary's unit here: http://fordbarn.com/forum/showpost.php?p=636642&postcount=1

The last one I rebuilt had the top deck warped but was able to be filed flat and worked perfectly fine.

Hmmm, I haven't had one of those yet. The worst I've had so far had the paddle completely worn out and the deck warped as I mentioned. Most the others just got by with new gaskets. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

Hi jkeesey,
The OD-C3 (electric motor) is made of pot metal so I had a few problems with that issue. The field frame was broken in three parts, but Super Glue did the trick on that. The ground screw shaft was broken and gone, so I made a small sleeve to screw the ground into. The tip of the wiper shaft bearing cap was broken off, and neither JBWeld nor Super Glue worked so I fabricated a new bearing cap. The most time consuming has been the small brush spring retainer (there are 2 on the OD-C3). They were originally made of fiber but I have made a couple of replacements out of plastic. Problem is getting the right plastic so that the new part won 't break / split which has happened to me twice. I think I have the answer now.
I do agree with you that they can be rebuilt, and its fun to do so. A few of those small parts from suppliers would be a help too.

smurph thats where you threw me off, I was still thinking vacuum. Your right that there isn't much avbailable for the electric motor repair. Most times they just tell you to buy a new one. On a nice note with odd brushes and springs I have a late 20s early 30s supply of odd electrical components. Brushes, springs, and everything in between. I can usually find parts in that set to fit whatever I pull apart.

According to Fiken's wiper service these motors are made of pot metal and warp in the chamber area. This condition does not allow the paddle to make a good vacuum seal.

I got an original '30-'31 deluxe wiper off of eBay a year or so ago for my '31 roadster. Cost me around -$150- and I doubt it can be repaired:eek:. However, I do not plan on driving in the rain and it does fill a void...:(.
If I ever decide to make the car an all weather vehicle. An electrical replacement with the switch on the motor would do the trick.
6 or 12 volt ones are available at most "A" vendors I beleive.:)
