Driving Chassis Laws

I wouldn't worry about it. Just stay in the neighborhood. If a cop writes you a ticket for driving around the neighborhood then he had nothing else better to do that day. Most cops would probably just stop you to check if out and ask what it is.

Life is simple, but not easy! Determine a direction, learn when to control your speed, and lean into the wind.

Drive the heck out of it, if you get a ticket, get a picture, it will make a great story! It's no fun to live among the timid!

In Michigan you could just put a slow moving tri-angle on the back of her and as long as you didnt drive over 25MPH shes legal.

Mark

even if you are insured and something happens while driving i doubt you will be covered or they may deny the claim if its not registered to be driven....... to much personal risk

Not sure why you wouldn't want to just finish it? If you do get in an accident, you won't need to worry about insurance, police or anything else. Except what halo size you are. Or horns, I don't know you that well.....

Dear unfinished Restoration,,,

If the registration is more than 6 month's passed being expired...& a Cop stop's you Good luck,,,You say your in Calif ??? Grab your *** & kiss your car good bye,,, Impound time my friend,,Plus a ticket for good measure...

Let's see tow charges,,daily impound "Fee's",, City impound Fee's...your talking about a few hundred if you get it out the next day,,,A week latter add on another $ 300.

The Ticket,,no license,,no insurance, go to the drug store & get a big jar of Vasoline...Cause after the State get's done with you you'll need the whole jar !!!!!!...

I had my modern car stolened & it cost almost $ 300 to get it out of impound after the Cop's found it...And that was only one day in Car "jail"

whoa greg hold up:: some people take it dry:eek:

Here's the scoop in the people's republic of California:

Other than farm implements, all vehicles driven on public roads must be registered with the state DMV. To register (or renew registration) an automobile, one must first show proof of insurance. Some counties also require you to provide a smog certificate.

If you are pulled over for not having registration, the L.E.O. has options to warn you, cite you, or possibly have your vehicle impounded.

Even if you are having a vehicle towed, if it is towed with one or more wheels on the ground, it must be registered. Otherwise, it must be towed on a flatbed tow truck, or completely off the ground on a trailer.

Even kids in go-carts are not immune...

Put an SMV symbol on the back, take it 5 miles out of town on a blacktopped county road with little traffic and teast it out. Been there and done that several times. Rod

Not sure about your particular 'hood but I'm sure I should be in jail for a long time on the amount of nonlegit vehicles I've hot lapped my neighborhoods in over the years . The last place I lived in was a real 911 ghetto. The cops had WAY better things to do than screw with me. Currently I'm in a nice quiet hood of about 200 houses mostly retired folks who like my old cars. A cop would be pretty rare. I make sure my junk is registered I have my plates with me and don't go more than ba couple of blocks from home. Most cops are cool but you can always run into the one that isn't. I'm mean really if the brakes work and its your first start how can anyone not go for a ride? Good luck!!!!

you are driving a vehicle registered as a model A ford (if it is even registered) however it is not constructed to its entirety, no body, proper seats windshield etc. The car was deemed safe when new as equipped, not evaluated for safety in its state of half completion.

Driving just a running chassis would be considered an unsafe vehicle in the state of NJ, as a matter of fact, press a cop who knows the law and he could fill out an an entire summons book. I know becuase im the guy that writes the tickets.

Is that a M-P that you are working on? If so, I would let you go! I am nicer than Christian above! :D

As mentioned above, liability insurance is a must. What if you hit that neighbor kid and the sued for a few Million! These liability law suits are sticky. Having run a business for 20 or so years, been there done that!

Dog:cool: here!
YEH! for California's STRICT laws to keep dangerous contraptions off the road, along with unlicensed cars, unlicensed drivers, uninsured cars, unsafe cars, & them dumb DRUNKS!!
Poor overworked cops, tryin' to protect us from the IDIOTS & tryin' to protect the IDIOTS from themselves! My hat's off to the cops,:D:D (If I wore one)
In our town, Dogs:cool: aren't even allowed to roam around, causing chaos & crapping on stuff & peeing on whitewalls, blackwalls, & causing hub cap & wheel rust & bitin' folks & killin' CATS!
Don't tell Ol'Bill I posted, we sposed to be takin' a break to finish the car. He's Kranky, dropped his NEW ampumeter & CRACKED the glass!:( Buster T.

I live in Arkansas which is a far cry from Cali. but never the less when I'm cruising the country roads I get a little voice in my head that says "take it through town". Yep drove a chassis right into Fayetteville. Then into Springdale.
Passed plenty of cops got plenty more looks. Even had folks driving up beside me taking pictures with their phone. I made sure to use all the proper hand signals. Just as a refresher to everyone here, those signals would be wave to the left then to the right.
I say enjoy every chance you take. Whatever happens you'll enjoy telling the story to the grand kids someday! And one more thing, find the most ridiculous looking hat you can find, and a pair of cheap riding goggles. Never hurts to make'em think your crazy!

When I lived in NJ, it was pretty rural and I used to drive my unregistered tractors and and old 55 Ford "woods buggy" for short distances and down to the Gas station. The cops there were pretty cool...Then! Now they're a bunch of stormtroopers and there are too many of them. How did we ever get along without them?

I couldn't disagree with you more, pay attention to traffic and you will see countless violations most of which we look the other way, or instruct the driver to make a correction; tickets are not always the answer. The question originally posed was one of legality, not enforcement.
