Deluxe Delivery

Turns out somewhere in the great white north a fellow ford barner is holding onto a 1930-1931 deluxe delivery that comes from the same small town where my family's farm has been for over a hundred years. Tonkawa Ok. is just a blip on the map not much more than a co-op and a gas station these days but it was a thriving community in the 20-30's due to oil. Thanks so much for sharing the pictures Jack.

I have talked to Jack several times about his Deluxe Delivery, but those are the first pic's I have seen of it. Thanks for posting them. Rod

Yes, eventually I will get it restored. I got some good tips off Fordbarn on building the wood structure, that I plan to follow. The chassis and sheet metal is all there and is solid. It's just all that wood that I've got to come up with.

I wondered if the "Thomas Bros" was still operating in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. Doesn't sound like it. Thanks for posting the pics, Tincup.

It would be nice if you could preserve that original signage. I'm a retired graphic designer, so that vintage lettering is a special touch for me.

I am hoping I can find someone locally to help me make a stencil to repaint the original signage on mine. I tried and found it very hard to see it through the thin paper. Best that someone more skilled at this than I am give it a try. Rod

You might find an old sign painter who could reletter it for you with a brush as was done originally. New sign shops just use laser cut stick-on letters. No one is taught to paint letters any more. But there might be a retired old timer near you who could do it. Check with nursing homes.

Actually hoping the locl custom graghics business can help. Not too many sign painters left in this area as there wern't too may to start with. Good idea though. As long as the stenciles are made right I can paint it on by hand and have it clearcoated. Rod

I am not sure what kind of paper it was, but it was light weight and pretty transparent, just could not see enough through it to acurately trace more than about 40% of the lettering. Rod

I'd like to keep the Tonkawa, Oklahoma signage on the 31 Delivery. My wife and I just watched a TV program tonight about the "dirty 30's". It was about the horrible 8 years of drought and dust storms in the Dust Bowl centered in Oklahoma, Kansas, and the Texas panhandle. Made me think about our Deluxe Delivery there in Oklahoma in the Dust Bowl days, when many "Okies" gave up and headed for California and other places. It was on Channel 10, and a great documentary!

Looks like a 4-digit phone number on Rowdys' Delivery. I love those early phone numbers! We have a '37 Plymouth Sedan Delivery project with a 2-digit phone number on the door!!! Now that's an Old, Old phone number!

Hey, I found a pic of the '37 Plymouth Delivery with a 2-digit phone number. Note that the telephone number is "39". The Other Delivery project is a 1938 Plymouth we drug home a couple of years ago. Got Chassis, for both. Not Ford, but Deliveries are cool, whatever they are.

I actually found a young guy ( late 30's ) to Hand Paint my Deluxe Delivery to replicate my Grandfathers 1930 Deluxe Delivery. Pinstripping and Signage was about $700.00 total. I thought it was a very far price. He travels all over the country for his work.

Four digits phone number from the original owner. He quit his business and went to Ca. in 1934. His nephews family owns the local grocery store. Rod

McCready, do you have a picture you can post of the signage on your 33 Ford delivery by chance? I love the vintage signage on Ford and other commercial vehicles.
