Ford O Matic conversion

My 61 Galaxie has a 292 y block with a Ford o matic. Today the trans sarted pumping fluid out of the pump/ convertor area. Have a price to rebiuld it but I'm thinking if it's out I may upgrade. This not an original car (Rat Rod) so if I can chop cut and rebiuld that's not a problem. Any ideas????

A C4 conversion is an option if you don't want o/d. Cost around 650 plus trans.

If you want a standard trans, 5 speed.

A C4 Is what I was thinking about. OD isn't real important. Can you help me with any install parts info? Does it have to be a specific C4? Like I said it's a rat so trying to go cheap as possible. Rather break a knuckle then the wallet!

For C-4 kit check at Flat-o Products. You will want a 1971 up C-4 case fill. Don't bother with the earlier 'Green Dot' because of the shift pattern and small 24 spline input shaft (among other items).

If your 61 is a true ford-o-matic, I believe it will be the aluminum cased 2 speed. If so, definately replace it. If you want a cheap get by, most cruiso's through the mid to late 60's will work. It will have to have a 292 bell housing though. They are detachable, unlike on the 2 speed. You may run into differences on the driveshaft yoke and maybe a few other small things.
