Rear hub help 48-49 f100

Hi folks,

Sorry to impose on your forum, but I hope you are willing to lend me a hand. I tried the search function but what I found left me more confused.

I have an old firewood trailer that was made from a 48 or 49 F100 pickup bed and rear end. I don't want to waste your time by explaining why, but I am trying to remove the rear axle hub and brake drums. I have attached a picture to show you what I'm working with.

Unlike newer vehicles, the drum is behind the axle hub assembly. As you can see, the axle is keyed. I cannot find a snap ring or anything after having removed the nut and the washer/keeper.

HOW DO I REMOVE THIS HUB?! I tried a 3-claw puller but there is not enough flange to grab ahold of.

Thanks for any assistance you can render.

The bed is the same from 42 to 50. Fender style changed in 48

Thanks Skidmark. Yep the fenders are different than the 46/47. I tried a couple of different search terms on Ebay and haven't come up with anything. Can you provide a link or a suggestion on search terms? Thanks again!!!

Flathead ford or jeep or packard rear hub puller. Those are a couple. New ones are expensive lots of used ones out there. Sold the extra ones I had last fall at hershey.

That hub looks alittle different then a early ford hub. Take a picture of the rear. Just wonder if the rear is out of something else.

Jeep used that style up into the late 60/70's

those hubs are held on by a tapered axle stub, the keyway is to make sure the hub does not spin if the axle nut gets loose, studebaker is another car that used that type of axle, check with some of your parts stores that loan tools, you might get lucky, check on model a and ford flathead clubs in your area, they are necessary tool for those cars, there are two types of pullers, one that goes over the wheel studs, and one that hooks on the snout of the drum, those drums are locked on very tight so it takes a very stout puller to remove the drum, where do you live?

As stated above, that hub is a little like early Ford but does not have the groove around it like the early Ford, so a dedicated early ford puller will not work. There are pullers out there that have 3 or 5 legs that bolt onto the lugnuts, you need to find one of these, the bigger the better. I believe some shops will loan them out.

Try not to damage the threads, leave the nut in place (but slacked off a couple of turns for the initial work of getting the hub broken free.

Mart.

Thanks so much for the help guys. I borrowed a puller from a friend. He called it a "knocker wrench." It worked like a charm. He recommended putting some anti-seize on the tapered axle when I reassemble. Again, thank you guys so much for the guidance and help.
