Help Me Build A Hot Banger!

Depending on what is wrong with your engine, it would be the only way I could see you getting by for $1k. Even that would be stock. Once you start an engine there's no turning back. Why not drive it til fall and then do it next winter? A tired A motor will still go a long ways usually... Besides, you'll be able to research your "perfect" build and save up money.

be prepared with these engines the first 5 to 10 aren't bad after that it averages a 100.00 a horse, not a cheap project.

You might get more responses on the HAMB. This forum is for original restorations (and the many small mods) to the Model A as it came from the factory. Not for hot rods. Good luck on the build!
Ray,

We each are entitled to our our opinions but I think his questions fall within the category of "many small mods" that you mention in your post. I think his questions are appropriate for this forum (of course I am not making up the rules) and sending him to HAMB is doing him a disservice. I think the people with the answers to his questions hang out on this forum. His questions would get lost on HAMB. MAFCA and MARC are dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Model A. With the mods he described he could enter his car in a MAFCA or MARC meet under the appropriate class and in my mind this should be the criteria..

The first two things I'd do is a counterweighted crank and a 5.5 head. If you have a counterweighted B crank, you can have it ground down to A specs. and save a lot of money.

Kinda like 500hp with an SBC. I got 490 with my last one and to get that extra 10HP would have doubled my build cost.

Thank you sir.

So if I get this motor and the motor is bad I could just use the crank and sell the rest of the "B" stuff. That's a nice plan B. haha! Thanks man.

E-mail Jim Brierley @ jim4e4@gmail.com he has done a few articles on mild and race engines . Jim has helped me a ton! He also does cams . Keep an eye on here and swap meets and get a good head. I got my Dan Price head off the for list on hear and it is a 6:1, Jim did my cam Red's sell nice headers and intakes at good prices. Same goes for Carbs I pick up two 81's off the bay Had Jim on the phone went I fired it up , said it sounded strong it is 60 over/ balance

Good luck with the build ! Keep us posted

Thanks skip. I've already got a Riley with two fresh 97's, a Wico JEM magneto and some Reds pipes. I'll google him and see if I can find some of that print.

Hey hotrod,
Do some studying/googleing on the Wico also. If it's a wico X , upright on top head...'impulse' ... type mag, that's not very streetable type. You set the timeing, usually about 18/19 or so, tighten it down and go....no way to vary timing otherwise! May be good for all out 'hill climbing' type use. Anyway, before spending a lot of time/money on that mag...study it -vs- a good distributor, IMO. Good luck:)

You might check with Bert's on a B block. I got my diamond block from them about ten years ago. In my opinion, the "C" head is junk. buy an HC Model A head and use a Model A water pump. I''m guessing my engine puts out 65-70 hp. Besides a 5.9 head, I use a reground "hill climber" cam and a downdraft 94 carb. It wasn't terribly expensive. 3-4K.

Why not just keep what you got, instead of spending money on unknown engines.

Number one how much do you want to modified your engine. 80hp 100hp 150hp here is a 150hp head that I built myself.

I wouldn't spend $600 for that unless I could tear it down and magnaflux everything FIRST. You could very well be buying 400 lb of junk.
